3 Observations From A Modern Rolex Submariner Fan

Observation #1: The 14060 2-Liner is perfect on NATO, especially with Tritium patina and battle scars and scratches.

Observation #2: The 116610LN (Submariner Date) is killer on wrist and a fantastic technological evolution of the Submariner line.

Observation #3 The 14060M 4-Liner (COSC) is the “Goldilocks” of Submariners, just the right flavor and mix of classic tool watch and modern technology.

Bonus Observation: One can never have enough Submariners in their collection.

I picked up my 14060M 4 in 2012, over the new ceramic model at the time. My decision was driven by a small wrist and budget. With hindsight, a wise decision.

That is a perfect description of why I chose mine.

It’s not vintage, like the early four digits.

It’s not modern, like the newer ceramics.

It’s simply “Classic.”

My opinion is that one cannot go wrong with any Sub.

This one happens to be my personal favorite.

I picked up a 2001 2 liner on Tuesday and for me it's perfect, but with the Sub there is no wrong answer

Never worn anything but the oyster on my 23+ years old 14060 "2-liner", as it´s so comfortable. Jingly-jangly, not as massive as the newer bracelets and no glide-lock, but I love it! Not much stretch. But I might get around to trying a NATO, give the old girl a whirl with the "James Bond" look...

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to either (hopefully) purchase a new 14060 or 16610 through an authorized dealers for MSRP, or a certified pre-owned one for anything near $6K, or am I just dreaming with where the market currently is at for stainless steel Submariners?

Welcome to TRF, Saltzy. Unfortunately, timing for you is not ideal in your hunt for 14060 or 16610 at an AD and at retail.

First, these have long been discontinued. Though that’s not to say they’re 100% impossible to get as NOS. A buddy of mine got a 14060M Random Serial NOS from an AD in March of this year (but at a price well above MSRP for the newest iteration of the Submariner Ref. 114060; Current MSRP of $7500).

Second, if you were interested in the newest versions of the Submariner or Submariner Date (Ref. 116610), you’re likely going to face a wait of at least a few months, if not more.

Third, the secondary market (rising tide lifts all boats) has priced-in the demand and unavailability of Rolex stainless steel sport models new at ADs. As such, I would say you’re looking at $7-9k for a complete set/like new pre-owned 14060 or 16610 ... and New In Box, probably in the $13-15k USD range. I wish I were joking re: prices.

Thanks.

Sorry, I misspoke on the model numbers.

In layman's terms, I just want a new model, ceramic bezel, basic black face Sub, date function or not, at MSRP from an AD.

The good news is that I'm the NYC area where there are a ton of AD's. I spent last weekend calling every one of them seeing if I could get on a 'list' of some sort. 80% laughed, 15% acted like they would call if any came in but I could tell were just giving me lip service, 5% seemed genuine they would.

I would think Tourneau is my best bet, as they are obviously heavy volume dealers. I plan on taking a walk through the city tomorrow to shake some hands, get my face known, and try to convince someone I am a serious buyer not looking to flip for over MSRP that just wants to buy their 1st Rolex....and then sit back and hope someone calls.

Any other suggestions, or is that basically the best gameplan here?

Appreciate any advise.

Are you originally from NYC? If you grew up in a smaller market and have connections to the area (visit with some frequency), try and build genuine rapport with your local AD.

I would also cast a wide net (as you’ve already started) with NYC ADs. I would think you could get a newer Sub or Sub with Date at MSRP through an AD within the next 6 to 12 months.

Having both a 114060 and 14060M, I can’t get used to the “weak” handset on the 14060M after living with the the six digit reference for a while. I understand all of the usual supercase criticisms, but it’s hard to argue against the improved legibility of the 114060.

Then again, I do appreciate the extra “bite” of the minute hand on the 14060M into the minute track. This should occur on many more current references, and is something that Tudor does really well.

Is true, I love the venerable Sub, my favorite is the SubC (maxi case and dial, ceramic, glidelock).

Older SDs have the best parts I love about the Submariner and the Submariner Date. The SDs having no cyclops feel more symmetrical, which is nice in terms of aesthetics and they still have a date function, that's a big plus for me. I probably check the date more often than the time.
