<<< business travelers query >>>
Morning all. I have a business trip coming up and I'm curious to know what your travel threshold is for driving vs. flying.
I live near Toronto and I'm visiting a client in Baltimore. The drive is about 8 hours 30 minutes. To fly is 3 hours 30 minutes, not counting getting to the airport (1 hour for me) early check in etc etc. There are no direct flights ... I'm actually thinking of doing the drive even though it's a long one. Curious to know what my TRF brothers and sisters would do ... Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk |

How long do you need to be in Baltimore?
Which border crossing will you be using and have you taken into account delays both ways? Traffic in Baltimore can be bad depending on time of day and location. Unless I had the time to do other things along the way and at the destination I would rather fly.

I would fly. And then rent a car or use Uber in Balimore.

Having to stay attentive for 8 and half hours is no bueno for me when I can just rest and have someone else take control of transportation.

Peace Bridge in Buffalo but I have Nexus and TN work visa so no delays. The problem is the all in travel time to fly is close to 6.5 hours when you take into account, driving to the airport, getting there 1.5-2 hour ahead (remember for me it’s international travel so you need to allow for customs clearance etc). I’m leaning toward flying but if I can tie in another meeting along the way I might drive. |

A) short stay with nothing else to do. B) But you're not the one 'driving' the vehicle. |

Over 5hrs drive for biz requires a flight and rental car or car share hire. For pleasure I can go 10 - 12 hrs a day depending on whether I have the fam with. Maybe fly to the closest direct flight airport and drive to Baltimore. I've done MD, VA, DC, runs and there at least one direct route from Toronto. I've even got friends who fly out of Buffalo to DC to have wings and pizza on the way back. There are options Tbone! Find them. |

It all depends on the drive and if I can get a direct flight to the destination. I have a customer in Montgomery, AL, about a 7.5 hour dive but it beats the hassle of flying because layovers. However, I would not drive 7 hours to Atlanta because it takes an hour to fly there direct with plenty of flight options.
But 8 hours would be my limit on driving.

8.5 hours there and 8.5 hours back could be brutal depending on the traffic you encounter. Most typically take smaller airlines like Porter for this sort of thing and it saves you a lot of hassle. Unless the cost is significantly more to fly there on the aforementioned and rent a car once you're in the city I say flying is the way to go.
At the end of the day though anything you decide that gets you there (on time) and back safely is good. I just think 8.5 hours on the road each way sounds very stressful to me. |

5 hours or less is what I am comfortable with for driving vs. flying for business trip.

I fly from NJ to Cleveland often. I used to drive, it was about 7 hours.
The flight is about an hour. I find the whole thing to be mostly relaxing because on the plan and at the airport I can relax and read, whereas if I'm driving the most I can do is listen to audiobooks or podcasts. But if I factor in getting to the airport, security etc, I'm probably only saving about 1-2 hours. Not to mention Cleveland tends to have lots and lots of delays... Anything over 7 hours I wouldn't even consider driving it. |

4 hours was my tipping point. If you fly you, can rest or work versus having to be alert the whole time driving.

It’s funny, there was actually a mythbusters episode that had this challenge, although they did it by miles. For a (I think) 350 mile trip, one team drove, the other took a flight. They factored in the trip to the airport, arriving an hour before your check in time, checking a bag, retrieving it (obviously) at the arriving airport, getting a rental car etc.
The flying team won the challenge by less then 20 minutes. The conclusion was if it is 400 miles or more, fly. If less, drive. I am not necessarily agreeing with these numbers, that was just their finding. PS. Take me with you. |

Depends on the car. 95 Honda, Fly. 2015+ German, Drive.
Only been to Baltimore once, from the west coast. I flew into DC and drove up. It was actually an easy drive but it's been years. If I was in your shoes I would fly, all the downtime in the airport and on the plane can be put to good use. The most productive thing you can do in the car is a podcast, which you could also do in the airport. |

If there isn't a direct flight to Baltimore, is there one to Dulles Airport in Virginia (IAD), or perhaps one to Reagan (DCA) or Philadelphia? All those airports are an hour drive to Baltimore.

Driving all day wears me out and flying doesnt. If i want to get to where i am going at 100% i fly. Plus you can be productive on the journey if you are not driving

I would fly direct from buffalo if you fly at all.
I personally like to drive and hate to fly so easy choice for me. I drive to DC all the time to see family. 6 hours from here.

I drove back from that area a few months ago and stopped in Pittsburgh. It wasn’t bad. I have to fly to Texas early Sunday so going to stay at the Toronto airport Saturday night.
