Rolex President for GMT II 116710LN

I have a new mint Rolex (2018) GMT II #116710 Black discontinued full set. Thinking to trade for a mint Rolex gold President (1990) #18078 full set. Good or bad deal for me. What would you do?

Fair deal if the DD is a complete set.

I wouldn't do it if you intend to wear it daily.
GMT-C is VERY good on the wrist with Easylink and flat caseback plus the scratches don't matter like they would on an all gold watch. It depends what you do for work of course.

I think your all black GMT II is a keeper. The value of these watches could be a straight trade if I where to say each was roughly a $13K watch. Depending on wrist size, and what style you want to wear more often, then go for it. As I mentioned, I like that all black GMT II more than the BLNR or BLRO. I can appreciate an older piece such as this 18078, but For me I would trade up and get 228238. That means more Money, but you get a better bracelet, better movement, 70 hour power reserve, and amazing looking romans. My .02.

I wouldn't do it if I were you, particularly as the DD's from that era are prone to stretch and may just generally feel a bit dainty compared to modern Rolex regardless of model.

That DD photo seems to be a file photo.. get real pics of the actual watch, especially of the band and how bad it sags.. if you want solid advice, real pics are needed

This. Condition is a big factor in the value of the DD, which is a big factor in whether this trade makes sense.

Trading with a dealer is not smart, but hey if you must, I'll give you $500 more than they are offering you for the GMT. PM me please, PRETTY PLEASE!

You make some very good points. Currently, the other party values their DD at 12.5K, and I value my GMT at about the same, so it would be an even trade. On the other hand if I trade up - then I will need to add another 15K roughly, and not really wanting to do that at this time.

I don’t have an all gold watch, and I also like the unique and vintage appeal of the watch, including the bark bezel and bracelet. I’m not planning to wear the watch daily, but will rotate along with my others.

I, too, was *intensely* trying to source a bark finish DD recently. Condition and prices are all over the map. Also, the more I looked the more I realised that the 15k I wanted to spend wasn't going to cut it. In your case, the straight trade is nice, but you damn well better see the watch and trying it on in person before making a move.

That is a TWENTY year old watch! That's pretty old if you think about it.

Someone said the photo looks like a generic file photo and I agree. I advise caution.

If the DD is full set and in good condition, in a heart beat I would do the trade.

I’ve had a couple of DD’s in the past over the years, so luckily, I’m familiar with the wearability.

Good point about being a 20 yr. old watch. I’ve already factored in a RSC service on the watch.

It is a stock photo. I just wanted to show the comparison between the two watches.

I really do appreciate your thoughts, and others. Thats why I like and trust this forum to present the Pros/Cons and various viewpoints.

Just keeping things in perspective. So many folks have helped me, I'm always glad to give, hopefully, a useful opinion. Whatever you decide, best of luck. And, I absolutely love barked Presidents.

Your deal has to do mainly the on condition of the 18078. That will tell you if its worth 12.5 !!

If you really want a YG DD I would shoot for a later model double quick set.

Based on the value of your GMT you should find a nice model.

But I would keep the GMT.

Deal wise it’s probably around the money, but I wouldn’t do it, yes it’s a day date but as we say in the car industry is a “dinosaur”

It's an almost THIRTY year old watch... 1990-2019... or am I missing something?

What do you dislike so much about your GMT that makes you want to get a totally different style of watch?

or

What do you like about the YGDD so much that you are willing to give up a sought after GMT watch ?

I would not fit that particular watch. As other members have recommended - look for a double quick set model (18238)
