I have a theory
I was at a well known Rolex AD this weekend. As usual the Rolex case is only one third full with men and ladies DJs. I walked over to the pre owned case and there was a Batman there so I asked to see it. It looks unworn it even had a couple of plastics still left on the bracelet. The price tag was $18,000, no papers but she said she can give me a Rolex box. She also told me they sold one at that price the week before. Some guy just walked in and bought it on the spot. What is suspicious is why no papers for a watch that new? Harder to trace the original owner? So my theory is the store “sold” it to one of their own and put it back in the pre own section to realize another $9,000 in profits. They may be playing both AD and grey.
Just a theory. |

I’ll be that happens as well as AD’s letting watches go to gray dealers for a handsome kickback on the premium

So the AD can sell a brand new BLNR with full set for $9250 and they can sell a used BLNR without papers for $18,000......

Well, no one will know unless you were the one whom they sold the watch to initially. If they have bought it second hand for re-sale, then they have most likely also paid over MRSP

In theory yes you “can” get a brand new BLNR for the MSRP if one is made available to you or you’ll have to walk 10 feet over and pay double.

And that’s why I said it is suspicious that a watch that new doesn’t have papers. It makes it difficult to establish who bought the watch in the first place.

My AD just started selling "pre-owned and vintage" watches. Wonder where they'll get them.

My AD recently told me the same. They expect to start taking trade-ins of a few select watches, particularly those watches they've sold to their regular customers. I didn't ask but I assume they'll price pre-owned watches at market rates.

I recall the launch of the iPhone 11 and walking past the lines to the AD. Store was empty along with their watch displays. I was offered water and asked to be put on the list for the GMT and they said list was closed. I tried on a chocolate motif dial day date and the SA stated I could request any watch I wanted if I purchased this particular watch. It was beautiful and he went on to say that they don’t have lists and provide watches to those customers that support their store. I thanked him and bought a GMt from a trusted seller.

I don't know of any ADs in California that sell pre-owned Rolex. At least not in OC.

I can believe this. The amount of money to be made on the pre-owned market is probably irresistible to many of the managers and SA's. Basically free money. Not sure about the tax ramifications.

Fourtane in Carmel, CA - again a very impressive rolex selection. Their preowned/vintage selection is just about as impressive.

I had suspected. without any inside info, that Rolex would not allow used Rolexes to be sold by AD's. Guess I am wrong. It's happened before.
My AD has a current model full set Sub date for $9k and a Kermit full set pointed 4 for $15k. A few old Tudors and Omegas as well. We'll see how quickly the used section grows. With the dearth of SS Rolexes they surely have room for used pieces. |

First of all I will never believe a fresh watch that is coming with a box, but no papers. It just doesn't happen. It takes a "special" kind of individual to get a watch, take it out of the box, take the papers out of the box for some reason and throw them away all while keeping the box. Usually people leave papers in a box and lose both or keep the papers somewhere and lose the box. So I feel like they are doing this to pass off a new watch as used.

Of course this happens. It has been happening for years. None of this is new..
I guess not many people noticed as most watches were easily obtainable. Now that they are not, people are noticing every little thing. |
