Tough decision: Daytona 116509 blue

I’ve had my eye on this watch for awhile. Called local AD and they can get it in 1-2 months, nearly no discount. I’d pay $36 and retail is $37.5. With purchase of this watch, they claim it puts me near the top of the “list...” to secure a stainless Daytona, white or black dial who whichever comes first. We all know how the list game goes.

Do I really want the 116509 ? I like it, but I think I’m only buying because maybe this watch also balloons like the yellow gold green dial and experiences the Mayer effect.

If I grow out of it I also don’t want to lose $10k trying to resell it. So then do I go gray market route ?

I wouldn't spend nearly $40k on anything I didn't absolutely love; I also would only trust a salesperson as far as I could throw them...

Sound advice and thank you. What’s also driving my logic though is the promise of a stainless Daytona. Id love as a long term holding to have either the white or the black. Pay over market for one as is ? Or go blue, build relationship with an AD, and hope I get the Daytona SS at some reasonable point ?

Honestly if I were willing to pay $36K so that I could spend another $12K for what I’d really want, I’d just pay the grey market price and be done with it.

40 large is a lot to not be in love with the watch. Given a chance to get a Daytona is tempting but again, that's not guaranteed either. Hope you get what you really want.

Does anybody see any upside pop on the blue dial however ? I know it’s not SS, but look at the blue dial AP royal oak, blue dial sky-dweller, nautilus, etc...

So a grey market 116500 white dial is going to cost $25K. If you buy the 116509 blue dial for $36K you can enjoy it while waiting fir your 116500 at $12,400 retail.

1. You may decide you love the white gold 116509 and live happily ever after.

2. You may get the 116500 you really wanted and sell your 116509. Assuming you sell for around $30k your total investment is around $18,400. You would save $6,600 in this scenario.

pay over market or never see one.

maybe you will get one form the AD a while after you buy the WG version. How much is that? 48k, not including tax?

or buy SS today for around 22ish (sorry, I don't know what they are selling for). But that general range.

If you were head over heals for the blue dial, then sure thing. I am all for it. However, it sounds like you are not.

I have and will continue to buy gray. and I have wonderful relationship with my AD. there is only so much they can do. if I can get it from my AD, then of course, I prefer. But I would likely never see a Daytona. if wanted one, I would go gray in a heartbeat.

Love mine! Wear it more than any other watch I own. Purchased well before I knew of the John Mayer vid. It doesn’t draw a lot of notice, which is what I prefer. It’s only blingy if you’re up close and paying attention. I love the weight of the PM and I get to look at that gorgeous dial many times a day.

As someone already said it.

Only buy 509 and 500 at the same time.
Or you'll not likely to get the 500 afterwards.

Only buy what you love and don't be blackmailed in to buying anything.

Not that I'd do it, but it seems cheaper to pay double retail on the 500 than what you are thinking. Don't forget tax too brother.

It looks to me like your proposition is a loss from the get go. You buy a 509 from AD for $36K. If you sell it tomorrow for 30K you lose $6K or possibly more. You rationalize the loss for a possible gain in a 500 purchased from AD down the road.

I think it’s a bad bet....because it’s such a long shot!

If you decide to do it....I wish you luck! You will need it.

I would choose this over the SS anytime, buying this to get that doesn’t make sense to me.

If your really thinking about buying a 509 on a promise of getting the SS and then flipping the 509 at a loss tell your AD you'll do it as a bundle only then sell the 509 untouched bnib since the numbers work for you.
I'm not a Daytona guy but I'd much rather have the blue dial PM on that one.

If/when the 509 or 508 get discontinued- they are going up. I would not buy exclusively for this reason, but I understand your question or contemplating its long term collectibility.

I think Rolex very soon is going to do away with the non-ceramic Daytona’s, and replace them with ceramic.

Time from you to ‘bundle’. If your AD can’t make it happen, then move on.

I really like the blue WG Daytona. I tried it on twice. What I didn't love is the idea that the bezel could get all scratched up, whereas a cerachrome bezel is much more practical for a daily.

Of course, the WG/blue has gained more popularity since JM mentioned it. But keep in mind that the YG/green dial was supposed to be the hardest to get Daytona in a long time, it was well over $50k and a can't miss "investment" if you think of watches like IPO stocks.

And then the commotion died down, and DSW, who tends to have some pretty high asking prices had a couple of new or nearly new ones asking maybe $43-$44k. My point is that if you love this supposedly hot blue version, buy and enjoy it. If you think of TRF as top tier investment advice in the always rising, completely liquid world of Watch Investing, you may have some regret down the road.

I bought my 509 because i loved it. Classic Daytona looks with the best dial Rolex has ever put in one imho. Add the weight of white gold and I was all about it. I still want a ceramic Daytona. I never even asked the AD about if I buy this then can I get this. I wanted the 509 because I wanted the 509. It's stunning, and when it is gone there likely won't be another blue dial like that for a long time. I wouldn't buy a full PM Rolex for any other reason than I wanted that full PM Rolex. On it's own merits.

If it helps you get another watch you want someday that should just be a bonus.

I personally would much rather have the wg Daytona than the ss one. If I had the wg, I would not need the ss in my collection.
