Regular service for 1977 Submariner

Depending on who I talk to, I am getting mixed messages on routine preventative maintenance. My local expert (qualified to work on Rolex and uses genuine parts and is inspected by Rolex) states that since my Sub is running fine, he recommends to leave it alone. Nearest authorized Rolex dealer recommend sending back to Rolex for service due to age. My local expert states that parts may not be available for a 1977 Sub. Is regular (every 7-10 year) service necessary? Have you had problems getting parts for older Subs?

I plan to give to my son in about 12 months so I want it in good shape.

Is Michael Young the "go to guy' for restoration of stainless steel oyster bracelet?

Hi Tim.

Nothing wrong with preventive maintenance. There is also nothing wrong with waiting until it stops or shows issues.

In both cases the watch should be taken apart, cleaned, and worn parts replaced and oiled.

Michael Young gets good reviews but he is in Hong Kong and there is a long lead time. Rolliworks in the San Fran Bay Area is also a bracelet specialist. Your choice.

If your local expert can't find parts, it may be worth your while to look for other options. Eventually you will probably need them.

RolliWorks hands down for vintage service and bracelet restoration. I've used him and was blown away with the entire experience and final product. Sending it to Rolex can end up with original pieces being replaced like the bezel, hands, etc...

Refrain from letting Rolex touch it unless you speak to the watchmaker personally. They tend to swap out the important bits on vintage watches.
I know here in Canada, new rules have come into play where vintage watches now have to be shipped back to Switzerland for a Rolex service due to parts supply being cut off for anything older than the 3xxx movements. Again, I'd refrain from letting that happen.
Most good independant watchmakers still have parts availability.

Thanks to all for replies. I feel more comfortable using independent watchmakers. I have asked Rolliworks for a quote to restore my Oyster bracelet.

I had a 1987 serviced by Rolex and they changed hands and face because they said once the Tritium cracks they can’t guarantee the movement
