1957 Gilt 6610 Explorer

I really find this piece cool due to the color of the patina and how it matches the gilt color so well. The white sweep hand also makes it very difficult not to stare.

The 1030 IMO is the first durable movement that came out in the 50's with an autowind mechanism. Balance shock springs to absorb a sudden minor drop or ding, superb autowind and an improved escapement.

Installing a NOS period T-22 was the final touch for a beauty like this.

Isn’t servicing a 1030 a pain? There are no more parts available from Rolex right?
Should it be a reason to favor an early 1016 over a 6610?

I love working on the 1030's, they are very similar to the 1500 caliber family. Biggest issue is the autowind, but knowing how to refurbish them, they turn out working like new. Soon to be, I understand Rolex will no longer sell 1500 parts. When dealing with vintage pieces, the lack of parts is inevitable. Finding parts for the 1030, or soon to be 1500 is something I do on a day to day basis so that I can continue to service them many years down the road. If I can't find the part, then I know others who can and it hasn't been an issue for even the watches from the 40's. External components can be a different story.
