How many is too many

I just want to take a poll and see what you all think about how many watches is too many for a collector. Please include how many watches is in your own collections. Thanks.

I have about 30 watches in my collection.

Many are affordable watches.

I think the number is limited only by one's budget and sustained interest.

The only instance where you'd have "too many watches" is if you had repetitions of specific models where there's virtually nothing unique about them. At that point, you run the risk of "hoarding" instead of "collecting."

John Goldberger has hundreds of elite vintage watches, but each one has a function in his collection.

I currently have 2 Rolex, 2 Tudors, and 2 Seikos. I like rotating my watches on a weekly basis which gives me ample time to enjoy each one. Based on that rotation, I think 6 luxury watches is optimal with room for 2 for special occasions.

3-6 from a practical point of view, with 3 being grail status and 6 being more variety. More than that you are not really wearing more like collecting.

I think it subjective on the person, their needs and interests, and what they like rotating with. One of my friends thinks three is too much, and another is on 15 in the collection still trying to fill the "holes" he sees.

I have ten personally, and I am including cheaper beat around watches. I am always looking to streamline the collection to five nice references, but I can never decide on what those perfect five are.

In my view, if you always struggle to decide which one to wear, then it is too many.

Currently I have 60 or 70 maybe more, I have a liking for 50s or 60s vintage manual winders. A lot of them are not worth much but I still get a lot of enjoyment out of wearing them.
For me it's not all about how much money a watch costs but the simple pleasure of wearing it.

I'm also very lucky in the fact that I have no interest in any of the current hot Rolex models.

The formula to determine this is simple: N+1 = Too Many, where N = a number you don't admit to your SO.

Or if you do admit, you say that you got them at a SIGNIFICANT discount.

For me it’s not about the number but rather the wrist time. Whether you have 1 or 100, if they all get worn or hold some special/sentimental value, then the N doesn’t matter.

But to answer OP question I have 10: 6 in heavy rotation, 2 sentimental pieces that I cannot part with and 2 that I throw in the mix periodically.

I'd probably stop at 365, or maybe 366. I currently have eight in rotation. There are four more that I would really like to have. One for every month seems comparatively sane. The operative word being "comparatively".

If I'm being honest with myself, over 4 is too many. I'm not good at rotating evenly. I tend to only wear my favorite 2 on a regular basis and have to force myself to wear others.

Maybe over 2 is too many

If you can not remember what you have, then it’s too many.

Otherwise keep calm and carry on...

For me 3-5 is the right number. Any more than that and I start to feel guilty for not wearing them enough. I’m not sure guilty is the right word exactly ...

For a collector? An infinite number.

For someone like me who likes to wear his watches? Different story. Then I think that number is one that precludes the amount of time one can spend actually wearing the watches.

Having too many choices can leave you conflicted and unhappy. Having too many also may lead to some pieces sitting for days, weeks, months.

I try to rotate, sometimes two or three times a day but to cycle through anything above five pieces regularly is challenging, in my opinion.

True collectors are different in that they are accumulating for a theme or purpose. I think sky is the limit for collectors. For wearers like me, too many is problematic.
