mercedes benz vs bmw

Hi everyone! i am a big japanese car fan specially Honda but going through this forum i have seen a lot of european car following. I am not a big car nut and i have no clue when it comes to car i just love honda.

can people please enlighten me about mercedes benz and bmw. can i ask which one is better without being politcaly incorrect?

enlightenment will be greatly appreciated i am ignorant so please consider this as a MB vs BMW for a dummy.

there really isn't which one's better.
although both Mercedes and BMW are german car companies that produce luxury cars, and they have many models are are in direct competition with each other, they are actually quite different.

If you are looking for a car the feels very luxurious, a car that can deliver very smooth ride, while also having an engine that delivers crazy amount of RAW power, Mercedes is the way to go.

If you want a car that has less of the luxury feel, but a car that feels much more balanced, and a car that handles very well, and although may NOT be EXTREMELY fast from 0-60 but handles very well around the corners, BMW is the way to go.

Obviously, both of the above are just generalizations of the more expensive cars that the companies offer (ie. S-class, AMG line up, ///M line up, etc.).

For the lower priced mercedes/bmw, they still have variations, but are in more of direct competition with each other, and it really depends on just personal preference.

How can you be politically incorrect about cars?

I like MB better. I think BMWs look too sporty for a luxury car. My favorite is probably the S-class.

I am also a Japanese car fan-Acura and Honda. I live in SC, home of North America BMW. Both are different in my eyes-MB more luxery and BMW more performance oriented.

I've had both, currently still have BMW, would lean towards Mercedes for the next one!

I find Mercedes slightly better build quality and quieter to drive (Luxury), BMW is more sporty!

Have you toured the factory? I did and thought it was interesting.

They have pictures of all the BMW factories in the world on a wall. It was hilarious how the tour guide just "skipped" over the ones in Egypt, India, etc.

I too have owned both. Current rides are X5 and M3. I prefer the BMW's. Overall, I like the sportier feel and handling characteristics of the BMW's.

+1. BMWs just handle extremely well and I like their look a little better - more sporty than luxury.

BMW is a drivers car and Mercedes is a luxury car. At least in the lower end this hold true... of course when you get into the 7 series and the S class they're both performance as well as luxury but thats besides the point. A Mercedes is effortless to drive, and depending on the configuration, they're quick. A 3 series is easy but you know alot more by feel what is going on.

But what do i know... I drive a VW! :-D

well VW group. they are part of Porsche. and you know, as far as german cars go, there's nothing like a P car :D

Have to agree wil all the comments so far. I work with both brands mentioned each day (servicing, mechanical repairs) . Its really a matter of personal preference as to which one to drive. I prefer Mercedes for everyday driving, but you can't beat an M3 on the track . I suppose european cars just seem to have more character than Japanese cars. Having said that , a Japanese car will suit most peoples requirements for every day driving .

I have not, three of my neighbors have (here in SC, there is also a Germany pickup where they will ship your car back home). The process is order direct from the factory. Arrive in the afternoon-they put you up in a nice hotel for the evening and provide dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant (wine included). There is a half day driving class with on road and track driving with an instructor on one of their cars (not yours). Then, they spend 2 hours with you delivering your car-set up inside in a dramatic presentation platform and go over all the features. Leave late afternoon. I "think" it is about $1200. Sounds cool.

Chen, you don't look old enough to be driving a Mercedes. Even I don't feel that old to drive one (I drive an M3). Just my opinion, MB=for old people. And, as soon as you buy a Mercedes and start driving it, you will look 10-15 years older. Just a short MB true story: My friend wanted one so bad so he told his wife either she lets him get a Mercedes with four wheels or he will get a Mercedes with two legs. He is now driving a Mercedes with four wheels.

I've owned BMW once in the past, but the fast falling resale value make
me regret. Other than that, its fantastic to drive, IMO it have better grip
(320i) compare to Merc C200K.
But I prefer the look of Mercedes in general

We own both (me MB B200 turbo, wife BMW 325i). Both are ~7.5s from 0-100, but the BMW engine just sounds so much nicer and the ride is perfect. However, BMW hasn't got the model diversity compared to MB. And yes, I've been called grandpa by my German friends

A man and woman on the tour I was on did that. I think it's great to take the time to know what you're driving.

It's worth it not to buy them. Think about...by the time you sell it, it'll be worth next to nothing.

Honda has treated me very well. I bought a new 1997 Honda Prelude and am still driving it today. It has 160,000 miles and I have had ZERO problems. It drives like the day I bought it (as far as I can remember :) ).

My next vehicle will be something more interesting though.

BMW is definitely more performance orientated. It's a well balance car where you feel like you're part of it. It's basically a daily driver that you can take to the track.

Mercedes is sit and put your foot on the pedal and go with comfort.

It depends on your style of driving...I own a BMW which tells you my style of driving.

It depends on what you are looking for !

If you are looking for a high performance road/track vehicle then you must have an M - Power BMW.

If you are looking for a high performance luxury muscle car ( talking about the AMG engines more than 800Nm of torque ) then you gotta get yourself an AMG Mercedes.

My experience dictates BMW.
However a nice combo is a 911 and a Honda Element for your beach car.

iam on my second bmw since 2003,before that i had an x type jaguar,which was a dream despite the bad press it got in the uk.i test drove a lot of mb models but really i found them to very boring.there really was no spirit.the bmw is really a drivers car and would get my vote.a friend once said to me driving a bmw was like being the pilot where as driving the mb was akin to being a passenger on a plane.
