Sub C or Pelagos for my next Rolex?

I’ve always wanted a sub no date, but it’s so off-putting that you can’t buy one at retail price now. It seems like the supply shortage is directly related to people hoarding new watches with dollar signs on their minds - which is the opposite of what a black no date sub was originally about. For example, I recently stopped in to a highly regarded watch shop in my local area and they won’t even sell you their pre-owned or new steel no dates, Kermits, or hulks they have in stock (because they feel the values will grow exponentially and yes they currently have multiple of each). I get a business’ goal is to make money, but at some point it feels like enthusiasts are being held hostage by investors. I would love a new sub, but I think I’ve answered my own question. Still curious to hear your thoughts! Thanks.

P.S. I have an Air King 14010m 34mm and an Explorer II 16570 Polar, so a black dial Pelagos and eventually an Omega Speedmaster will complete my small collection.

Well....a Pelagos is a Tudor, so it can’t be your next Rolex, but I understand what you are asking. I have a black Pelagos and wear it more than my Submariner. It’s a great watch, and I absolutely recommend it!

Haha ya Rolex/Tudor. :) How does the extra size/thickness wear long term? Doesn’t feel much bulkier than the sub does it? I’m hoping the matte bezel and brushed bracelet help keep it a little understated despite its heft.

The difference in retail price and what you can get one for second hand isn't really all that much for the 114060. If you don't have an AD in your area just buy one from chrono or Davidsw.

I had the blue Pelagos but sold it. I felt it cut into my wrist and so it was uncomfortable to wear. It was a beautiful watch though. It was actually the most accurate watch I ever owned. It took two weeks for it to lose one second. Hang in there for the no date sub. You’ll get one.

Roughly $450 more for a 2014 dated warranty (assuming David includes tax) vs new from an AD still seems like a lot.

I forgot to mention part of what’s impacting my decision is the sub c is about double the price of the pelagos. I would think about selling my Polar if I bought the sub as apposed to feeling comfortable keeping it if I bought the Pelagos.

If the Pelagos can replace the Submariner in your mind then great! You save a bunch of money and its a great watch.

I get the sense that’s not you though... I’d hold out for the watch you really want, which sounds to me like the Submariner

I'm not sure how the tax works since I think you both are in Florida... maybe have it shipped to a relative out of state and then I think it would be tax free. I think I paid $8119 (with tax) or so from the AD. so $350 + value of the Rolex warranty is the difference. Id get on the list and wait.. but the grey price isn't miles away from retail.

I find it very comfortable, but I also find the DSSD comfortable, so some will disagree. The Pelagos is a great weight...even though it is titanium, it still has a substantial feel to it. Also, I find the titanium case ages better than steel.
I have said this before, but if the Pelagos had a Rolex crown on the dial, people would be lining up to pay $12,000 for it!
Titanium case, 3 day power reserve, helium valve, gorgeous dial, amazing bracelet. The dial has better legibility than any of my dive watches, and the bezel has tremendous action including a stop at 12:00.
Some people can’t get past the name, but again, if I’m being honest, this is a superior watch to the steel Submariner for less than half of the cost!

I have the polar explorer and the pelagos and feel that combo is perfect. The Pelagos is worn on various NATO straps and gets the majority of the wrist time It's an excellent tool watch and my vacation piece. The polar gets two to three days a week and dresses up. The sub is an amazing watch no doubt but for a person with a finite budget and wanting to maximize their horological diversity and use spectrum, I think the polar plus pelagos is a great pair to accomplish that.

I had a Pelagos and SubC, and ended up selling the pelagos- not as comfortable as the sub, kind of thick, and after a while i just lost my initial love for it. Love the sub and in fact later picked up an LVc. The pelagos has been traded toward a new omega Seamaster 300m.

Bottom line - if it’s a sub you want, I think you will regret getting the pelagos. Alternatively, consider the Seamaster as it is not too much more then the pelagos and much more value for the $ IMO.

Sounds like you’re settling for a Pelagos, that’s a bad direction. If the Pelagos was on your list to get the Pelagos, then ok, it’ll hold you over until you get the Sub.
But if you’re trying to substitute, that usually doesn’t end well.

Agree with this 100%.

If your heart is set on a Sub then you'll end up getting one at some point anyway. In which case you would end up owning both. I've done this a few times. Don't settle for second best but get the one you actually want. If you think you'd like to own both then yes, get the Pelagos first, but if it has to be one or the other then wait for a Sub opportunity.

Pelagos is very versatile as well. In addition to the great bracelet, I like wearing on a NATO, or even this leather ammo style strap for casual wear.

That looks really nice. I do think there’s a chance I’ll still want a sub, but I really like the Pelagos and think I need to at least give it a shot (considering the price difference). Thanks everyone for weighing in!

Pelagos all day. I’m an actually diver although I will never push the Pelagos or Submariner to its rating but I do look for certain things with a diver. The Pelagos has by far the best bezel you could ask for, IMO blows the Subs 120 click out the water. The Lume is 100x better on the Tudor as well. The Ti case is great if you like weight savings...

And for what you pay the Pelagos is much more for your money and you’re still getting the Crown behind the shield if you get my drift.

I think you will be happy. I have a friend who is a fellow Porsche enthusiast. He owned several Porsche’s but always thought he was working his way up to the Ferrari. In his mind, the Ferrari was the ultimate. Once he purchased his dream Ferrari (458), he only kept it for about a year and realized he enjoyed DRIVING his 911 more. He sold the Ferrari and hasn’t looked back.
Sometimes people need to scratch the itch, but then realize things aren’t what they built them up to be in their mind. I would sell my Submariner in a second before my Pelagos.
That is the luxury of having the extra cash to buy these toys...it isn’t always about MORE, it’s about the freedom to choose what you really like!

I think you should go for what you want. There are other AD’s that can and will help you, especially in FL. They can be bought at retail, no issues. You may have to wait a couple of month, but so what, you will appreciate it more.

I own a Pelagos and a few Rolexes. The Pelagos presents and appears more as a tool while Rolexes in general have more polished surfaces, dressier dial and bezel, and overall appearing more on the refined side.

The Pelagos is 50% of the price but 100% of the tool the Submariner is, it just not dress up and down as well. If you are buying the watch to be a tool, the Pelagos is a no brainer.

For the record, my Pelagos did not quench my DSSD craving, I have both now. I still enjoy the Pelagos very much.

Tudor Pelagos won’t scratch your SubC itch. I’ve had the Pelagos and nowI have the SubC and its a different class in every aesthetic point of view.

If you really dive, it's the tool you need.
Hyper competent this Tudor, and I find it less valuable, like more "never mind", than a current Sub for this purpose.

However it should be noted that the dimensions and proportions of the Rolex are better, so the materials used (gold, platinum, ceramic) and the famous value invested in will be maintained.
Also, titanium is scratched more easily.

Everyone to determine his needs, if you are a simple swimmer the Tudor is perhaps "too much"...of this brand I own a BB 58, and in this context I recommend it.

While the Ti bracelet does feel quite a bit lighter, the head itself on the Pelagos is actually quite hefty for a ti watch

If you really want the Sub then keep saving for now, but the Pelagos is absolute flames - recently got one after a period of saving and waiting, and *for me*, it's the best diver out there.
