Clasp Scratches

Any ideas on how to minimize scratches on the clasp side. Is this common because 18K is softer than lesser gold content. Am I just worrying too much?

In my limited experience, getting scratches on the clasp is almost unavoidable. I have a Sea Dweller and already have some scratches from sitting at a desk and typing. For awhile I took it off but then I thought, well, I want to wear the watch and not keep taking it on and off. If it bothers you, there are products to buff out the scratches.

I wouldn't worry about it too much : )

Is it the SIDE of the clasp, or on the polished gold ?

I saw some other post in here, with a guy using clear tape on the clasp.
I tried it my self, just to see how it would look. It's not a solution for me, but maybe you can live with it. have a look here :)

Linda, there's not a lot you can do. If worn some scratches will happen. If it bothers you at some point scotchbrite pads help a lot.

At service all is made well.

I would avoid polishing out the scratches between services, the long term results of over polishing will end up costing you more in the long run...to the effect of having to buy a new bracelet. Just wear & enjoy the watch, overtime the scratches will blend together & become less noticeable.

Do not polish the watch Linda, they are merely character marks.

I wouldn't put scotch tape on the clasp either.

Who knows what kind of adhesive compound they use and it could have a low acidity.

This is my main deterant from getting a TT Rolex. Too many complaints about scratches showing up on the bracelet of 3 day-old watches.

Linda, do what I do.

When I type, I keep my wrists suspended in the air and never ever let the clasp come anywhere close to the table!!

Ditto here. No scratches on my watches.

My wife's DJ, on the other hand, is quite scratched up on the clasp...and she doesn't care.

Wear it & enjoy it...and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

I'm positive the scratches are caused by typing on the keyboard all day. Maybe a gel pad under my wrists may help. I don't think I could suspend my wrists all day. If that doesn't work, I'm going to stop worrying, or at least try. Thanks for all your helpful replies, and warm welcomes.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. The clasp is considered a high-wear item and scratches are simply going to happen. If you fret over something that's going to happen anyway, it'll spoil the experience of wearing your great watch. It's similar to a new car or a new guitar. The first signs of wear are a little disconcerting, but after that you relax and enjoy the ride and the music and don't worry about every little blemish. As someone else said, they do impart character.

Or do what I do, I use a soft-wrist pad to rest my wrists on and the watch never touches the desk. You can get them from any computer store and they're very cheap.

Sorry, I just had this incredible image of "SUPER JJ!!!!" Floating horizontally in mid air, typing on a computer keyboard, wearing a cape that said: "SUPREME TOSSER" Magically suspended in air only by his super-Tosserness! Making sure his watch clasp is clear from the desk, protecting all mankind from scratchy-Rolex bands. Look, up in the sky! It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's..... SUPER JJ!!!!!!!

I didn't get much sleep last night....

The best advice I can give you is: get over it. Really.

I remember fretting about scratches when I first got my watch. I was telling a jeweler friend about it and asking what I could do.

He laughed at me and told me I was being ridiculous. At first I was miffed. Then I realized he was right. I was so worried about scratches, I wasn't enjoying my watch.

Once I quit angsting, I was so much happier. And my watch is still beautiful even with it's character lines.

So: get over it.

Jeannie

Thanks for all the suggestions, and so nice meet all of you. I'll have to admit, I tried floating my wrists in mid air. That lasted about five minutes. Tried the tape, it ended up in my hair, don't ask me how. Conclusion, I'm going to wear and enjoy!

Clear tape will work. Use Bestine to remove any gum residue if you remove the tape. It will not hurt the metal.

I worried about scratches when I first got my Rolex as well. The way I see it...anyone can have a pristine Rolex. Buy it, and put it in a safe. BORING! Wear it, Love it, Enjoy it!

That made me laugh, Linda! I had a two-tone DJ and noticed how fast the clasp got scratched up. As has been repeated here, try not to let it bother you. (My wedding band over the years sustained so many scratches it just ended up looking like it had a satin finish on it.)

I have a gel pad and it does nothing for it. I on the other hand bought the watch for two reasons

#1 Because of the history behind the GMT
#2 To simply wear the hell out of it.

After all it is only a watch wear it and enjoy it.

When I first got my GMT I was very careful with it. After having it for about a year, I am still very careful with it :) Although, I don't even think about it anymore. From my experience, being a student and just wearing it while doing casual things does not cause many scratches for me. Have fun with your watch.
