Yes, I enjoy shooting pool, I love playing straight pool. When I was in college I was pretty good and the semi-pros wanted to play me. Also in college I worked at a pool hall!!!

I played in college and always did pretty well in intramural tournaments and stuff...

but take it to the next level (city tournaments) and I couldn't hang.

I also never got good at straight pool, which basically means I wasn't that great at pool itself since it is so difficult and uses all the fundamentals.

I still have the ole Viking cue around somewhere...sigh...

I don't know what brand of cue I have. I bought it back in 1975 from a woman player who needed money. It cost a couple of hundred dollars back then and I got it for thirty bucks. Then about a month later she expected me to sell it back to her as if I had given her a loan!!! I said no way and kept it. It has inlayed pearl throughout the bottom portion of the stick and is on the heavier side(don't know how many ounces).
As for straight pool, I will always go for the angle shot instead of using the rails. Accuracy is more important and also with each table the rails will be a little different. So if you can shoot the angle shots you are much better off!!!

Had a pool table in the house from the time I was 8, and my dad insisted we shoot every day ... 'til the wee hours.

Anyway, I don't shoot much any more. Only when visiting the folks, and a lot of my game is gone. But by the time I was 16 or so, I could beat some of the best with "house" cues. As my dad always said, "if you can't play with a house stick, you can't play."

But at home, we played with, among others, a Meucci signature.

Mike, very true you have to learn how to play with house sticks. Because when you are out, like at a bar, you must play with what's available!!!
I also do not play as often as I did and usually when I do, I do not have my cue with me!!!

Ain't that the truth! But, c'mon! I know you have seen those "sharks" who carry their own cue everywhere they go, in the hard case. It just "looks" so ... wrong to walk around with your personal cue, IMHO. I always thought it was funny running the table on those guys, and watching the look on their faces when they didn't even get a shot.
"Awww ... break your stick back down and go home. I'll just hang mine back on the rack."
I never actually said anything, but I thought it, as did everyone else within eyeshot of such a display.

Mike, couldn't agree more!!!
It's a bit ironic to see a person in a bar come in with their own stick and then lose badly. I just chuckle under my breath and roll my eyes!!!

Yep, me too. Well, that's a "used to be" for me these days. I'll be 40 next time around, and my days of staying out shootin' stick are pretty much over. I played in a bar last year with the wife and I just don't deal with the drunks as well as I used to. Had a little "altercation" with one, which quickly turned into four, plus a chick. They thought better of it when I told them "you will take me, but before you do, two of you are going to the hospital". But it was uncomfortable, just the same. For the most part, I just play at the folks' house.

Man, you are passing up a great opportunity! Shooting pool is fun, and, at your age, really gets the girls going when you shoot well. And, "teaching" the girls to play is ... well ... priceless!

I play a little bit. Played quite a lot when I was in collage as well. Never won any tournaments but I could hold my own back then and even win a dollar or two from time to time.

Those are the classic looking ones. I was gonna buy an STL 07, but I kind of stopped cue collecting. Schon and Joss hit very similar, with Schon having the harder hit imo. Nice cue!

Oh well, I'm not very good at that either. You got a deck of cards?

I used to LOVE to play pool. We had a Brunswick Gold Crown V 9' Pro table in our basement. My father and I would watch the pro videos, buy books, and practice all the time. We've since sold the pool table (since we've moved) and haven't played pool in like 4 years :(

I played a lot of pool on the mini tables when I was younger but we play mainly snooker now and sneak out the the snooker room when we can. If we have a few friends round we will play some Kelly pool.
I have a few average cues but I find that cue quality and price doesn't change my game much.
The table is an early 1900's B & W that I had re-furbished by a local guy who was an absolute master on these tables.

Come round for a game anytime.

Pete. My first tip ... don't take advice from Steve.

Tip 2 - Just take the time to learn to play. You don't have to be great. Then start having some friends over on the weekends. It's safe, it's a lot of fun, and you won't worry your parents. They will know where you are.

Ok, keep showing the 'ladies' how to 'shoot some stick' cause they love a guy who can 'stroke it'

Really ... now your telling me something I didn't know. But you sound like a professional, so I will take your word for it.
