Anyone tell me anything about this watch?

Hi all,

Was showing my dad my new DJ41 and talking about mechanical watches, and he pulled this out.

It belonged to his grandfather, and he knows nothing else about it.

Can anyone tell me anything about it? And history of the brand, quality of the movement? Who made the movement? I can’t find anything on the internet.

A Swiss watch, that was ordered by the Clark & True Jewelry store for resale.
They are called "private label", "contract" or "jewelers" watches.

Crown is at 3, so this originally was in a hunting case (closed) instead of the open face case it is in now. Probably had a gold case that got melted down.
Appears to be 16 size from photo.

It has hounds tooth gears, which is a sign of quality. I am guessing it is a Longines or Aggasiz movement.

Patek, made similar movements, but I do not think this is one. The serial number would indicate late 20's and I think they switched to different style of plates by then.

Probably made between 1900-1920.

Despite what people think on this forum, most of the Swiss watch companies kept crappy records so there is no chance of confirming information from companies.

Just realized you were in the UK. Strange, that you got a watch that was sold in the US market, unless he just purchased it much more recently.

I found this on the internet, it’s a the same American brand (Clark and True), and has a Vacheron movement that looks very much like the one I have - except no branding, and no jewels (I think). The serial number (if it was Vacheron) would put it around 1907.

So is this a copy, or just a similar movement, or Vacheron?

No idea how it came to the UK - my great grandfather had it, in Liverpool, England before making its way to Ireland, so has been in our family a very long time!
