Do you think about the watch you wear to your AD?

Do you consciously think about the watch you wear when going to your AD to try something on?

I have this guilty pleasure of wanting to wear a SubC or (if I had one) a batgirl or some other high demand model just to see the SA's reaction. They always give me that reaction of "Ohhh... Ok Sir, I understand you are not just tire-kicker". I sometimes feel like I'm just bragging, and I shouldn't.

Maybe because I want to make sure they take me seriously ....

Am I a bad person for doing that?

Edit: some grammar fixes.

one time I wore a piece I got from them to see if they noticed, asked, or cared....they didn't so now I just wear whatever. If I am looking at another dealer I will just wear whatever, don't want to deal with taking off something nice and having them try to polish it or whatever when I try something on

I always wear something like my SKX007 and they always ask about it. No matter what I wear my SA asks.

Of course... Watch boutiques are the only places where I get comments on my watch! I wonder why...

My local Rolex AD knows me very well and has sold me all my Rolex models so knows what I have, so don’t give any thought to what I wear when visiting them.

But if going to another AD where I might be trying to get an in-demand non-Rolex piece, I tend to give it some thought. For instance, when trying to get a Nautilus, I wore my 116500. These days I wear my Nautilus. No idea if it makes a difference, but can’t hurt.

I suppose it depends if the AD is your regular one or a random you never been to before.

If it’s your regular one & they know you well it’s always nice to wear something you bought from them, just so they know you still have it & haven’t flipped it.

If it’s a new AD & your trying to get in with them, wear your most expensive or ‘in demand’ piece, that way, like you say, they are more likely to take you seriously and also, it’s an ice breaker, something to talk about & help them remember you next time you call in

I don't change watches to suit a retailer.

I don't really think about it. Then again, I only go to an AD when I want to purchase something and know they have it waiting.

I went to a new AD and wore my DD under my jacket. I went in looking for a SS SkyD. Long shot I know. But when he started to talk about how rare they were and this and that and gave me the whole bundle deal speech I just looked and nodded politely. He said he could source me a black or white if I bough a gold DD. I rolled up my sleeve and told him I was good on that and I have a DJ41 also. No more classic lines. I’m trying to collect the land air and sea Rolex watches and the SkyD would be the perfect fit for me since it’s 42mm. I don’t know if it worked or not but he knows I’m a serious buyer and told me he would do his best to find me one. I won’t hold my breath but I’m sure wearing my DD couldn’t have hurt.

my choice of watch to wear is dependent on the day/needs/outfit/etc. it does not consider whether i am visiting the AD or not.

I always walk (although it is more a swagger) into ADs like Nicholas Hayek...

Minimum 4 watches (and thats on my wrists, they sometimes pull up (or down) my trousers where I am wearing others.. once they see this they then usually take me into the back and open up the safe where they hold multiples of every watch in the current Rolex catalogue and let me choose whatever I want.
I normally go for a white face Daytona (or a Nautilus) if they carry PP and as they are so impressed they usually allow me a discount of about 25-40% off MSRP.. more if I pay cash as it is off the books, which I usually do.

They don’t seem to mind, even though I mention that I already have these watches at home and am just looking to flip the new purchase to my local Watchfinder on my way home.

I dress like a tramp most of the time so it's always a bit of fun when trying on an expensive watch to :

A. See the reaction of the security guard on the door.
B. The reaction of the SA when I take off a 40 year old Timex and put it in the posh tray.

I was in Bermuda in May last year. I was wearing SD4000 and told the AD that I would like to buy the SD43. They didn't have it to sell. Had a very nice chat with the AD and a guy from Rolex. We talked about the discontinuation of SD4000, and other Rolex models. They said I should keep the SD4000 well.

The AD that I go to sold me all my Rolex and Tudor watches. They know what watches I own so it’s a moot point.

I wear whatever I feel like on the day.

On my last AD visit I wore my Poljot 3133 chrono which I picked up for well under £200.:

Interestingly that started up a conversation with three of the SAs and even their onsite watchmaker (a collector himself with some Russian watches as well) come out for a look.

Can anyone here try to name all the watches on Mr Hayek’s wrists?

I get 3 very different responses when I wear my watches to ADs - usually new ADs that I visit while on travel.

1. 116500 white. OMG where / how did you get that watch? That is the pinnacle of Rolex watches.

2. YM1 blue. Nice watch that is getting harder to get.

3. Vacheron Overseas Gen 2 Chrono blue. That is a really nice watch. I love that watch. It’s my favorite VC Chrono.

I don’t have to think about it much as I never owned more than 2 watches but now that you asked I remembered that when I first visited Rolex boutique, less than 2 years ago, I had an Apple Watch on me. Fortunately that didn’t affect their perception or impression because soon after that visit they called to let me know a GMT is in if I’m still interested.

I went into a multibrand store that was also Rolex/Tudor AD to help a friend pick up a Tudor Bronze.

I wore my SS Daytona C. First lady SA that served me didn't even recognise it, even when I took it off to try on the Tudor. However, a male SA from accross the store saw it and zoomed over to take over the sale.

He asked where I got it and the usual chit chat. Defn felt I was being treated more like someone who knows watches rather than some off the street clueless shopper buying a watch. Didn't open any doors though to anything else.

As Biver said watches are a great way to communicate without having to say any words, and as most ADs check your watch out, it can be useful to manipulate their opinion of you if you have some business you want to conduct with them.

If I give it any thought (and most times I don't) it will be either a watch they have obtained for me or a grey Rolex which they couldn't/wouldn't list me for. My SS Sky Dweller is going to make a few trips to the AD this year. They are watch geeks. They will enjoy meeting it. It might even be the first one they've seen for a long time!
