Explorer I vs Speedmaster scale comparison
Hi guys,
Does someone here own both the speedmaster pro and an explorer I? I'm trying to get a feeling for the difference in size between the two. Any pictures of the two would be highly appreciated. I would've preferred trying it on at an AD, but surprise suprise... Ah I guess I don't even need to explain. |

Not sure it these pictures will help you.
7 inch 18cm wrist. If no one else responds I can picture them side by side when I get home later on tonight. Sent from my HRY-LX1 using Tapatalk

Great pictures Ian, thanks. Yes, please do.
The Explorer actually looks larger/the same size as the speedy if you take the picture at face value. |

Quick and dirty I'm afraid but it might help.
The Speedy is a bit heavier and a couple of millimetres thicker. The Speedy wears bigger than the Explorer both are very comfortable to wear and both are extremely well made and finished. Both bracelets are really well finished and both work well. My Speedy dispite not being chronometer rated is good for + 1 second a day, maybe I got lucky. I hope this helps but you really need to try both on yourself, not easy to do with the Explorer though. Sent from my HRY-LX1 using Tapatalk

I own both and they both fit into my collection just fine. They are very different watches considering one is a chronometer. Both are very comfortable on the wrist.
Either one you pick will be a good choice and you might even get the other one down the road. |

@Ian - thank you for the comparisons! I was surprised to see the Explorer was lighter than the Speedy. It must be the newer Speedy’s massive and thick bracelet that adds the extra weight.

Why were you thinking that? Speedy is bigger, thicker, has more complications. Both watches are made of stainless steel (slight difference in composition). Why would in spite of all that be lighter than the Explorer? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Because the Speedy has Hesalite, which is lighter than sapphire, and the Speedy is a manual wind watch so it does not have a rotor like an automatic. And, mostly, because when I wear my Speedy Pro, particularly on a strap it is very light compared to my SS Rolex professional models. So why, in spite of all the above, would it be so wrong or unreasonable for me to think such? |

OK...lets not get started on whether what you thought was reasonable or not. The thread will just get stupid.
Concur, Speedy is slightly bigger, heavier, thicker, etc....just like a slightly sportier watch should be. 7.25 or so inch wrist and to me anyhow they are both just about the perfect size. The side by side picture has them on a cardboard shipping tube...I do have a hand and forearm. I'm always baffled when people suggest the older 36mm Explorer. The 39 isn't exactly a big watch. |

I owned a Speedy Pro Sapphire Sandwich, and I currently own an Explorer I. I definitely agree the Speedy wears larger and feels a bit chunkier than the Explorer.
The bigger difference is how these two watches present on the wrist. They are really opposites. The Speedy dial is very busy (duh - Chrono) and the Explorer I dial is clean and clear. For two watches with steel bands and cases and black dials, they really couldn't look more different. I guess the reason I mention this is because it sounds from your OP that you are considering purchasing one of these and looking for the differences. They are such different watches, you could purchase one and still love the other one when you get around to buying that one. I sold my Speedy because I prefer the look of a different chronograph, which I then purchased. The Explorer could never have replaced my Speedy, because they are such different watches to me. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for all the input + pics everyone.
In my view, the explorer dial takes up quite a bit of real estate which gives the impression that it's not a whole lot smaller than the speedy. |

Great comparison pics.
I was on the fence between these two back in 2017 and went with the Speedy. Now I'm feeling the itch to get the Explorer....should've bought them in reverse in retrospect as far as pricing goes! |
