North Flag visits the US Air Force Academy

I took my son back to the Air Force Academy this weekend (he's a second year cadet) and snapped some photos with the NF and a few planes, including a B-52 and an A-10

Has anyone here ever visited USAFA?

Very nice! Visited there when I was about 10. I remember those static displays vividly. Loved walking under that T38

Yes, it’s a beautiful campus. Toured it in 2000 when I was thinking about applying. Ended up going to a “normal” school and have since flown two of those aircraft.

I love the A-10! Widely panned as one of the ugliest planes ever built (hence the Warthog nickname), but a badass tank busting machine.

I nearly went into the USAFA myself but decided that I didn't want to continue a life on the move into adulthood (my dad was in the Army).

You have every right to be immensely proud of your son! That's an Ivy League education he's receiving! Nice watch too!

I haven’t but I really should. Isn’t the blackbird grounded on there somewhere?

There is an awesome mountainbike trail on the campus of the Air Force Academy called the Falcon Trail. A retired USAF officer guided us in July of 2018. 13.75 miles with 1700’ of climbing, almost desert conditions at the start to alpine forest at the top. Lots of gliders training that day.

Yep, a few times. Almost applied but went to ROTC instead. Beautiful area, campus, programs, the list goes on. Nice pics!

Wow, great replies! Thanks for all the kind words. It's good to see the military connection here on TRF.

The NF seems to fit right in on military bases.

Hey fellow Michigander!

I offered to fly my son out to take a look, but he refused to even apply to USAFA and went to West Point. He made a USAFA cadet friend there and, following a funny tradition, got to wear his AF uniform for a week. The AF cadet got to wear this cute outfit for a week:-)

Congrats to you and your son, and good luck!

Go Army!

Cool shots. If I had my act together when I was in high school, I would have been keen to go to USAFA. Alas, I did not have my act together.

North Flag is a nice piece too. Proper field watch.

Thanks Al!

Congrats on your son going to USMA. I'm a fellow Army grad, but my son had no interest in following my footsteps. He's wanted to be a pilot since he was 5 years old, so it was USAFA all the way.

Here's a close-up of the front of the A-10 on static display. This particular aircraft bears the nickname "Chopper Popper" because it shot down a helicopter in combat.

I've stayed at their hospitality house up by the chapel on one of my visits to the Springs. Very nice accommodations and beautiful setting.

I think that it's a beautiful aircraft and I would love to have the opportunity to see one in action, up close and personal, the way we used to see close air support in Vietnam.

My son's goal is to fly the Warthog. He loves it! It makes a father a little nervous, having a son fly that close to the battlefield, but he wants to brrrrrt.

My little brother graduated from USAFA in 2013. Amazing place, and many great memories. Regretfully, he is no longer with us, however that school helped mold him into the amazing and selfless person that he was. Great pics, and congrats to your son!

I'm so sorry to hear your little brother is gone. I'm sure he was a wonderful man. I know the academy has helped my son develop into a great person, too.
