Submariner Crown feels rough...?

Hey all,

Brand new SubC Date and when I pull the crown out to change the date and time it feels very rough when I screw it back in. Actually feel rough unscrewing also. This feels a lot rougher than my DJ41?

It feel really gritty screwing out and back down if thats a better way to describe it.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Could be a little dirty. Had the same issue with a new Seiko diver. Pull the crown out as you are setting the watch and wrap a little dental floss around the stem and pull the floss back and forth a few times. Others on the forum may have a heart attack over my suggestion but it worked for me. Or you can always bring it to the AD. Good luck

Nobody has experienced this? Was difficult to even get the crown out to set the time. Very disappointed about this. 7 days old.

Where did the watch come from?

The triplock crown is the gold standard of screw down crown. All the ones I have ever handled have been consistently flawless in operation and perfect in feel..

In my opinion, no other crown is even close. They are that good.

My concern would be that the watch had abuse issues or that it may not be genuine....thats how uncharacteristic your issue is.

I know the exact thing you’re speaking of. Almost like a grain of sand is in there. I had this on a new sub and was told it’s normal, others speak of a flawless crown which rotates like butter, so I don’t know.

I did this myself on my Seiko diver, year old Datejust 41 and 3 years old Submariner date. DJ41 had some grime in between the threads. As for the Sub, let’s just say the dental floss came out almost black after I was done cleaning. Unscrewing the crown and screwing it back in now feels silky smooth effortless on all watches!

My opinion nothing comes close to a Patek screw down crown. So smooth effortless .

All my Rolex watches feel different. Some soft but also gritty.
Same goes for winding. Doesn't really bother me.

What I always do to engage the thread properly is push the crown in turn it a little counter clock wise whilst pushing a little and than keep on pushing turning clock wise.

Perhaps doesn't make sense but I work with heavy equipment whereby sometimes need to turn a heavy piece of 35 ton on a shaft. We do it like I wrote above.

I find pulling the crown out a bit awkward to with trip lock. It’s pretty stiff to say the least

Mine are all buttery smooth.

I’d take it back to your AD or RSC for a look.

I have the same issues bouncing between a sky dweller & Sub. They feel different

Sounds like this is normal.

Dont force the crown by pulling it to set time, unscrew crown turn slightly clockwise it will pop out, if your want to set the date or time now you must go slightly anti clockwise and pull and it will go into position 2 with ease, if you do not do this you are yanking the tripple lock mechanism.

I just tried this and it made a slight difference; however, when I unscrew the crown it’s like gritty sand and the same screwing back in. It’s almost like screwing a screw in sideways and feels awful.

The watch is going to the AD today to be examined.

I’ve never felt anything rough when locking it back down, but I have noticed what seems like it catching when I wind the watch.

Mine was doing the same thing I cleaned the threads with a soft bristle brush and that made it better. Ultimately it went to RSC for service for a separate issue and now the crown is smooth as butter as well.

Must say I'm surprised at hearing these issues..

All the triplock crowns I have ever owned were flawless...even on Tudors that I had with them...I can't even imagine one being faulty in terms of tactile feel.

My triplock is smooth. Sounds like either dirt or swarf from the build process. If it were me I'd take it to RSC in the off chance that the threads are bungled. Whatever you do, DON'T force it...

There can be issues. Best to have the AD look at it and, if need be, send it in to Rolex Service. Tough to do on a brand new watch but Rolex turnaround is very quick.

I feel like it’s a lot easier to make so buttery smooth when you’re not concerned with water resistance more or less.

Do you typically back wind between winding forward?

I'd bring it back to the AD. I've had some rough winding watches and brought them in for eval at a RSC.

Took it to my AD and they agreed it’s a rough crown. I can send it to RSC but I’m hesitant. I had a new watch sent to RSC a year ago and it came back scratched. Even my AD today said they have had watches come back scratched and he won’t send his own there. So I’m hesitant and not sure what to do.

I might sell this grey and buy another grey that’s new.

Or I might take this to a local watch maker to get his opinion.

Is there a way to lubricate the crown without opening?

Really disappointed about this.

Can you explain this further? How new was the watch? It’s brand new so how can it be dirty?

The initial wind out and when winding in it’s very very rough and not easy to wind down. This what you are speaking of.
