New Submariner 116610LN Running Fast & Slow

Hello All,

I recently acquired a Rolex submariner 116610LN that’s running about 2 seconds fast per day. That's very accurate. The funny thing to me is, when the power reserve is half full, it starts losing about 1-2 seconds per day. So, if I fully wind the watch (40 full turns of the crown) and let it sit dial-up, it will gain about 2 seconds in the first 24 hours. Over the next 24 hours (the second half of the power reserve), the watch will then lose about 1-2 seconds per day. So at the end of my power reserve test, it looks like the watch has been running without a gain or loss of seconds. Is this normal? From what I know, the movement should be gaining OR losing time consistently but not both. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

It’s within spec and it’s holding power reserve.

You are worrying over nothing your watch is fine, gravity is the main enemy of any mechanical movement no matter the make or calibre, when resting off wrist dial up or dial down the balance staff runs on the ends of it's pivots very little or no added friction. Thus the balance wheel has a sightly higher amplitude so will make movement run very slightly faster, its the same when mainspring is at peak power-reserve fully wound, and when on half mainspring power. When watch is off wrist vertical crown up or down or the balance staff pivots runs on the sides of the balance pivot causing a tiny more added friction this slows the amplitude so will run very slightly slower. No mechanical movement will keep 100% perfect time there could be almost daily tiny deviations.

It works perfectly fine. Mine is +3 every 24hrs, and I am really unable to measure + or - 1 sec. Stop worrying about + - 2 sec happening both at the same time. Just enjoy your watch and try not to wind it 40 turns each time.

A watch will always change timing throughout it's power curve, it does not stay the same.

This is the whole point with an automatic watch; activity keeps winding it and, hopefully, holding it at a consistent power point in that isochronism curve.

Holding a watch at the same point in it's power range provides for the most consistent timing.
