Wow, this looks great. Not entirely convinced on the versatility of the blue details, but it's definitely cool.

The above one is strangely about Vacheron (even if the link says “1661”...) :) hopefully this one should work.

I'm not the biggest fan of carbotech, but the price point is smart. Given Panerai's recent pricing, I would of expected this to be in the 15k range.

This. Love at first sight but not sure about the versatility. Also when I tried on a Submersible Carbotech the lightness of the watch kind of seemed a bit weird. I know it’s supposed to be a plus that it’s so light, but it kinda bothered me lol.

This Blue on Carbon Black is stunning, very contemporary. I WANT! Can't wait to see it IRL.

I dig it. I love my Submersible that's pretty much made of the same everything except the lume is giant chunks of 3D blocks.

I do wish I could find a PAM00700 on the market though. No one seems to want to part with one.

This watch is quite a come down in price from the previous "Labs ID" $50,000 carbon tech of 2019.

The PAM01661 has the thin 1950's case but its still about 14.5mm thick.

This is the first carbon-tech Panerai with a sandwich dial. It weighs a staggering 96 grams so you'll be lucky to know if its on your wrist.

At the same time, at 44mm it should be more wearable than a stainless steel or even a titanium 44mm Luminor.

The only non-carbon casing component is the caseback which is DLC (diamond like crystal) coated titanium caseback.

So its a pretty exotic watch for the going price.

I don't think it has hit the shops at this stage, has anyone got news to the contrary?

Panerai are not shipping anything until July, so I am informed?

I agree with some critics: Panerai should have dropped the "Automatic" off the dial.

I got a call vom Richemont in mid March that it is available now and they could send it to me the same day. However I prefer to visit the boutique which was closed at the time due to covid19.

I think the rationale might be to differentiate the more historically accurate manuals from the modern automatics. Personally, I don’t mind it, as I find it adds visual balance to the dial (two rows of text on each side of the dial).

That's interesting. I am wanting to purchase the 1661 and have been in contact with both a Pam boutique as well as their e-boutique. Both said availability around June-July. This was about a week ago.

Has anyone else heard anything on availability? Perhaps Panerai had a small number of pieces ready to go before the shut down?

The "Automatic" doesn't bother me either, but I do think it is very deliberate on Panerai's part as they seem to remove text like "Automatic" or "8 Days" on some higher end models even if these features exist. It's a small point of contention I have with the brand. Panerai knows exactly what customers prefer... I do agree with your assessment though of differentiation between modern and historic.

I am located in Germany and I got the call from the Netherlands. She told they have limited quantities and I was the first one who got contacted by them.

That's what I was suspecting in regards to a limited quantity being available before factory shutdown. I'll just have to wait a couple more months until production begins again.

Thank you for the reply.

The "Automatic" nomenclature detracts from it being a high end timepiece. Its akin to a low end brand having to advertise on the dial look its 'Automatic'.

One would have thought that Panerai would have had the sense to think more of the intelligence of their customers who are spending $12,800 on a timepiece to know whether it is manual wind or automatic.

At the very least the "Automatic" could have been stamped on the caseback instead of up front in your face.

The "Automatic" also cheapens the sky blue accents to the dial and hands, there's a fine line between cutting edge sophistication and technology and being gimmicky.

This model needs more thought by Panerai and how it wants to project its image. Its a fine line between success and failure.

I think this might be a bit harsh, Steve, as several high end brands use “automatic” on their dial. It’s an industry standard/tradition.

And it’s also arguably much more restrained and reasonable than the SCOC text on Rolex dials.
