Paring down to 2 - pretty much a done deal but would appreciate thoughts

I’m not a hardcore collector, don’t buy into the hype, don’t buy to invest, and only get what I like if available and within budget. Got into the hobby only a couple of years ago, so a few other watches have come and gone. I’m not a VIP at any AD either, but for some reason I’ve been offered sought-after models, some of which are now discontinued (BLNR, white OP, ND SubC, 116710) but didn’t really pique my interest so I graciously passed. That said, I managed to get into the 116500LN “waitlist” at an AD last year, so only 9 years to go if I’m extremely lucky. But I’m also losing interest in the Daytona, if I’m being honest. So we’ll see..

In the meantime, would some of you guys please have a quick look at my current collection:

The thing is, I’m paring down the collection to two, one of which MUST be the moonwatch (my 24/7 piece). For the other one I’m torn between the BB58 and Zenith EP. The SubC date will likely have to go (not bonding with it, no wrist time, doesn’t fit well, thick lugs, etc.). The Nomos has been commandeered by the missus so it’s also a goner. But for the sake of gaining perspective, let’s assume that this is your collection. Which 2 would you pick and why? Thanks for your time.

I'm with you on the Omega, Nomos and Tudor. Great trio - maybe the missus lets you wear the Nomos on occasion.

I’d pick the Submariner simply because I’d have to have a Rolex and a diver.

Out of all those I prefer the sub but if you must keep the Speedy I say it and the BB58 make a better pair

Sub and Speedy. Done. Game over. The Zenith and Speedy are both chronographs and seem too similar. The sub is a nice complement to the Speedmaster.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

I fully understand the fondness for the sub. It’s also my first rolex and I’m thinking of saving it for my now 5-yr old son so I might just keep it for that reason alone.

The BB58 is still fresh and unworn. Bought it in late December and I haven’t gotten around to even sizing the bracelet yet. Don’t know if that’s the one to keep yet. Still torn between that and the Zenith. Or I can sell both and get a DJ36 or an 14060M and be done with it. I have to stop now or I’ll complicate things even further. Cheers! :)

You need a diver and seems you don't like the Sub...so BB58 it is.

I'd keep the Sub and the Nomos. Sub as a daily rugged Rolex that can do anything and Nomos as the elegant dress watch. I got on WL for BB58 when they were hard to get, as soon as it arrived at an AD and I went to look at it I knew I didn't like it in person. I don't want the normal BB due to thickness, but BB58 is too small for me. And I think the gilt on the bezel is overdoing it. Just my 2 cents. I don't like the Zenith. Just not my style. Similarly to BB58 with the Speedy, I want one when I look at some pictures online, then I try it on in real life and I immediately lose interest. Something about it is not for me.

I really like the vintage feel of BB58 and the way it fits to my 6.75” wrist, but I get that it isn’t for everyone especially if you’re used to the SubC or bigger watches.

The speedy is something that just grew on me. I found it boring at first and in fact this one is my third. Now I can’t take it off my wrist. I tried a TT Daytona at an AD but it didn’t sing to me like the speedy does now. I installed a micro-adjustable clasp and now it’s even better and more convenient. It’s also a strap monster, as every enthusiast knows. It’s not perfect, I know, but I love it.

As for the Zenith, I’m beginning to realize that I’m more into chronos than I am into divers. Thus, the dilemma. I can treat it as my vintage one for special occasions.

If the moonwatch is a requirement my other would need to be a Rolex diver. If the 116610 isn't doing it for you maybe look at a 5 digit sub or sea-dweller.

True, and in that sense the BB58 isn’t bad at retaining value either so I’d only be losing $ on the speedy. But then again, for me this isn’t just about the perceived value. I’m a bit sentimental and that’s part of the reason for my choice.

Cheers!

It's all personal preference. I do have a 7.5 inch wrist so I felt it was a bit small on me. Same as I always thought I would prefer the 36mm DJ as it's the classic size and not the 39.5mm DJ41. But as soon as I tried both on, I knew the 36 was too small for me. Plus I didn't like gilt bezel in person. I think if they did this bezel and dial it should've been a TT.

Speedy and the El Primero are just those watches for me that I always love in photos and then as soon as I try them on, I end up not liking them for some reason. As for TT Daytona not singing to you, I totally get it. I am a fan of TT watches, but I dislike TT Daytona.

If you like chronos more than divers, I think you have your answer.

Great advice and I’ve actually been thinking about it. It’s just very difficult to get an unworn 14060M at a reasonable price. I’d even consider a straight swap with my 116610 (or plus cash either way) but that’s not going to happen in this current market. I prefer my watches brand new (except for the Zenith since it wasn’t doable). Still going to giving it some thought, though.

I agree. Sub and speedy is a great combo, but it would have to be 5 digit for me. Otherwise I'd go zenith, that's a beautiful watch

Sorry you want to get rid of the Sub but honestly, it has to be sub + speedy, no substitutes.

BB58 and Speedy. I’m in agreement with you about the Submariner. It’s proportions are ugly and the posts which say ‘Sub because it’s a Rolex’ compound my feelings. I changed my collection completely over a few years. My only Rolex is a vintage Datejust.
