Rolex 6150 opinions needed

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and am hoping someone can give me a bit of advice about a Rolex 6150 I have. My dad bought it second hand in the 1980's - there's no box, papers or history. The watch can be wound manually and runs but the self winding mechanism has never worked.

I'm interested in having it fixed so the movement works properly but I'm a bit concerned about authenticity.

I've looked at photos of other 6150 watches and I'm fairly sure the dial on mine is not original. The lettering doesn't look very sharp and the painted numbers and batons are a bit sloppy. I'm not so bothered about the dial but I do want to know whether the movement is original.

Is the movement stamped with the same unique serial number as the one on the case? Or is there any other way of confirming that the movement and case are original?

I'd be grateful for any thoughts or opinions.

Yep, repainted dial, but probably the original hands.

I don't see any reason why the movement or case should not be original. A local competant vintage watch specialiast could open the watch case and provide you with the details.

I'm in Southport, would happily help if you are local in the north-west....

No watchmaker can be sure the movement is original to that case if it is an early A296 movement inside. But Rolex could.

However, the originality is less of a concern than the authenticity. The dial seems slightly cocked to my eye - so it might not be an authentic dial plate to begin with.

When it’s opened to service, all will be apparent to the watchmaker.

Thanks for the responses. A friend of mine who worked at an AD serviced the watch for me about 20 years ago and didn't say that there was anything out of the ordinary about the movement. My only concern now is that if the dial has been replaced in the past then the rest of the watch might not be so original either.

The next question would be who is the best person to work on it? I live in East Lancashire (a bit too far from Southport but thanks for the offer, Mike). Apart from a service (and perhaps a better dial) I'd like to get the automatic winder working again. I've seen a list of vintage watch dealers on the site but is there a list of recommended people who carry out repairs or restoration?

I've had a quick search but there's so much information on the forum it's difficult to know where to start.

For a piece like this, I’d take a day off and take Mike Wood up on his offer. There’s not much he doesn’t know about vintage Rolex and a few hours drive is a small price.

Unfortunately I don't drive any more for medical reasons and 3 hours on a bus is a bit too much for me. I'll have to see if I can persuade my wife to take a day trip to Southport at some point.

But maybe for a rare 36mm vintage Explorer with sentimental value...
