Can someone redpill me on the Stainless hyperinflation?
I'm struggling to understand why SS watches (vintage subs in particular) are commanding the prices they are now. When I first visited my local jeweler had had a couple 1680s there and a bunch of other SS models for $4K, $5k etc and they weren't moving so much. Now they are above $10K.
They are gorgeous pieces of course, but I just don't see paying MORE for a stainless 1680 than I would for a YG 18038. One is $1/lb and the other is $1600 an OUNCE! Is it because they don't wear nearly as fast as gold? That they are more durable and/or a more casual outfit accessory? I apologize as I'm sure this has been asked a lot, but I MUST KNOW! Sidenote... is it a good time to get a 1803/8? What would be a good price with a pres bracelet? |

Then you are in luck, definitely buy yourself a nice 18038. I'm sure you can find prices by looking for sold items on eBay and forum classifieds. Be sure to follow up with photos.

Like everything else in life the value of something is beyond just material costs. Right now, sport watches is the pinnacle of Rolex watches and are in higher demand. Back in the day bubble backs and gold pieces were the definition of Rolex and Paul Newman Daytonas were kicked around on the floor and given away for free with a purchase.

Gold still commands more of a price v. stainless. But forget the part of your argument that addresses the weight of the piece. Anything worth more than scrap will not be scrapped.
