An Incoming...and Outgoing

Sooo, this happened kind of fast, but I had to depart with my RO 15500 Anthracite dial.

At the end of the day, I want my "standard" RO to be one that I can wear dressed up, casual, socially, etc., and I want it to be a great fit. While I feel I can get away with a 41mm RO, it certainly is big on me and I prefer the "bigger" watches to be my weekend watches or something that's a bit more of a statement (I say 'statement' relative to me, as my statement watches are many of your everyday watches ).

I replaced the 15500 with this beauty, and of course I had to put in more money with the trade, but let me just say this for anybody that is newer to the AP brand. Many people say the Jumbo is special. Until this morning, I just didn't know how special it genuinely is. My bank account isn't happy, but I sure am!!

Congrats. Not a fan of the 15500 or the 15400. Much prefer the 15450, the 15300, and of course the 15202.

The only AP one needs to own. As long as you don't have to set the date.

What's so special about it? Could you expand on it?

To someone who hasn't tried it on, it seems like the dial is flatter, no second hand, no light play with hour markers, PITA to adjust date, and wide flare despite the 39mm.

I can try, and I'll just say this is my opinion, and the opinion of somebody that's only been into watches for 7-8 years...

To me if I had to sum it up in one word, I'd say the most striking feature of the watch is the symmetry. I couldn't appreciate this until I saw it for myself, and compared it against the 15500/400, 15300, and 15450. Not that these other references are bad by any means, but I don't think they're as striking in terms of the case size, case width, proportions of the lugs and integrated bracelet, etc.

For me, personally, the 15202 fit the best. For reference, I have a 16.5 cm wrist, so definitely on the small side. I feel all of these references work for me, but they work in different ways for different occasions, if that makes any sense?

I will also comment on the second hand. I thought this would be a big deal for me, but maybe it's just still "new" so I'm just overlooking it. It hasn't bothered me at all and hasn't taken away from my interest in the watch. I made an above-average attempt to find an excellent condition 15300 with proper box & papers, but as you probably know those have skyrocketed. I found only one that I seriously considered, and at the end of the day I just didn't want to spend that type of money on something that is almost 15 years old and likely needs a factory service, etc.

The other factors just don't register in my purchase decisions in terms of watches, but that's me. I have winders so the amount of times I need to "painstakingly" change the date are minimal. And much of the time unless I'm in a huge hurry, I quite enjoy doing this. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "light play", but this watch has luminescent hour markers. Being honest, I didn't even know it had them, and just went to validate it does. Clearly that's not a purchase factor for me!

Your mileage will vary, of course. This isn't everybody's perfect watch anything more than any other one. But I hope I was able to explain a bit more...at least what swayed the decision to add it to my collection.

Sounds like same path I took. Got a 15400, it was great at first and then found it too large, got a 15300 and haven't looked back. I find the 15500 is even worse than the 15400 and seems very empty and lifeless.
