What to look for on a 14790?

Hi guys I'm looking at venturing into my first AP and love how the 14790 fits on me. I wanted to reach out to some more experienced AP guys for a short list of things to look out for? Is there big attention to be paid on dial and hand lumes matching like in vintage rolex, bracelet stretch, etc? Just want to help educate myself before diving into the AP world. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

From what I read. Buy newer version of possible. F series. Early 2000s.

I missed out on one last month. Been hunting for one since, might get the 25594st instead now.

Good luck!

Is there a technical advantage to a newer F series? I'm def a fan of when they had the longer sticks vs the newer shorter dials.

From what I’ve seen there are 2 different standard dials for the 14790ST, the long indices(earlier series) and the short indices (later series) . You also have a ton of different dial variations. Military(Numerals), Yves Klein (Bright Blue), Nick Faldo, Blue, Gray, White, Red, and Yellow. There are probably still more to be discovered

The short indices ones have the “AP” clasp, while the long indices have the traditional clasp that’s found from the 4100. I had a short indices one with the newer AP clasp it was nothing but problems opening easily if you slide your wrist past your pocket which will hook it and open the clasp. It was even laser welded by AP and the issue persisted. Because of that and the dial, the sweet spot for me are the long indices since they arguably look better and have the double lock clasp.

The biggest thing to look at is the case and bezel. A lot of them have unfortunately been rounded out and over polished. I wouldn’t be as worried regarding service for the 14790’s since the parts are still in supply at the AP Service Center. You’re still paying the AP tax, but it doesn’t require a movement replacement like when things go wrong on the 4100’s or on some of the Mid Size Day Dates.

On the dials of some of the long indices you’ll see the dials start to patina in which they’ll fade in some spots or look like they’re chipping around the indices. Don’t know why but seems to happen to a lot of vintage Royal Oaks.

I’ve probably touched 20 or so now and have only seen one with a stretched bracelet, no clue if there is an aftermarket fix but expect a big bill from AP.

Also if you’re looking online make sure it’s actually a 14790 and not a 4100, they look pretty much identical and some dealers seem to mix them up. Easiest tell is that 14790’s have “Swiss Made” typed below the 6 Marker and have AP stamped on the crown.

Awesome resource, are you planning on doing anymore for any of the other Mid-Size models?

Nothing planned but that would be interesting, I know there is a lot of confusion around mid sized references from the late 70’s - late 80’s. Many thanks, Ben
