Which is the most special or desirable Panerai in your opinion?

Which panerai is the most important? The most special? The most desirable?

I would have to say PAM 21 or the Bronzos. Particularly the PAM 507. I think these two are my absolute favorites.

What are yours?

I’ve been on the hunt for a NOS Pam 682 with the sapphire case back. DavidSW got one in and I bought it immediately. I’ve always wanted a Panerai, I use all my watches in saltwater, and I have a smaller wrist size so.......the Pam 682 was my most desired and it did not disappoint.

The textbook answer for Vendome-era and beyond: 127, 232, 233, 249, 360, 372.

the 172 is pretty "special," in my opinion. classic bettarini / luminor case, unique metal (tantalum) and feel. only 300 made.

unlike the bronze stuff that Panerai keeps rolling out, I'm pretty certain they'll never re-release another watch in tantalum.

you should do it. i have one, and it's a really great watch to wear around. black, so a little understated - but it has the domed sapphire, which is of course eye catching and adds a lot of character. ceramic makes it pretty worry-free for frequent wear.

I have a 233, which is iconic as it houses their first in-house movement. I’d count 127, 372 and the pre-Vendome models as others that if money was no object, I’d want.

Yeah... love my black ceramic pieces... can wear it daily since you don’t have to worry about desk swirls

There's surely vintage pieces that are far more rare and sought after, but if we are talking modern; I think the PAM127 is probably the most sought after. It really was the shape of the things to come. There's also a few models like the PAM662 and PAM399 which are hard to come by. I wish we had regular production models that were more similar to these Radiomir 1940s just as the PAM372 is similar to the PAM127.

Since you said vintage included and important, here is my old 1948 6152-1 on original strap and verified. It’s a well known watch that is one of a few made of it’s exact type. The watch was in spectacular condition and was bought from original owner’s family in Italy via a well known Panerai collector and dealer. Some of you will remember this one. Threw off some serious radiation and had a Rolex movement. Anyway here is an old wrist shot.

I think the best looking, and a great presentation of modern Panerai is the 422.
But I can't pull off a 47mm, and I don't like faux patina for the lume.

My favorite PAM is the 317.
Even though it's far from a "classic" PAM by being too complicated.
I love the unique feature set (which I find very useful) and movement, manual wind, and the button on the bottom left balances out the crown guard and lever a bit.

Honestly, any of the newer “Big Black” models out of the newer materials gives Panerai a unique place in the market. Panerai positions these models in the top end of their line up for a reason. I think Panerai owns the “Big Black Luxury Watch” segment. They do it better and are more versatile in their looks with different straps. In my experience, the general public tends to comment on these models more and you never see them in the wild.
