Rolex Saves an Engine - PICS>>>

Just getting this information in, but definitely incredible - think 'Superman spans the train tracks'... a Rolex Submariner was used to plug a hole in a piston so that a Corvette Z06 could finish a race.

Check out these pics:

Apparently the engine lasted through the weekend with the watch keeping the piston in tact.

After the piston was removed, you can see where the watch was holding it together:

But unfortunately when the thing finally let go, the watch travelled through the engine ending up in the bottom of the crankcase:

You know that Rolexes are made tough but this is taking it to another level!!!! Pretty awesome!

Looks like the LS7 was no match for the Sub date.

You just never know these days.

Other question would be who say hey we could put my watch in there to fix that? And not a $50.00 watch but a Sub of all watches…

I think the engine temp was a little outside the COSC testing conditions. Also, I don't know if COSC tests the accuracy of the movement above 9:1 compression.

Unfortunately it seems that the strength of the watch ended up tearing up the cylinder walls pretty well, so it doesn't look like a resleeve will cut it:

Nah... got better things to worry about.

Heck, just wearing the Daytona at my desk job and being VERY careful with it, it got some noticeable wear in a short period of time.

I wear the Submariner everywhere, usually 24/7...

Awesome cars! Mine is a 2002 Electron Blue Z06, I just finalized the purchase this week of an LS3 to put in it... should be fun!

And yes, this was a hopefully light-hearted attempt at some April-foolery, hope it was enjoyed a little bit!

I am going to have to disagree with the statement above. Read below:

Quote:
One of the most interesting high-temperature applications of ceramic materials is their use on the space shuttle. Almost the entire exterior of the shuttle is covered with ceramic tiles made from high purity amorphous silica fibers. Those exposed to the highest temperatures have an added layer of high-emittance glass. These tiles can tolerate temperatures up to 1480 ° C for a limited amount of time
