1983 GMT Master

Can someone help inform me a little on this subject? I went in my favorite jewelry shop and they had this there. Tag reads 1983 model, but I was unable to get the serial to verify, but will if I decide to buy. Band seemed stretched and loose, but honestly, I was thinking if I bought Id like to put a black band of some kind on it. I have seen a few pics here of what appeared to be a rubber or cloth style band (excuse the newbness, I am just entering this world of Rolex watches). What are some things I should know about these older watches, and what should I look out for? Any idea on a rough value? I will share the asking price after a few comments are made, just curious on what the estimated value is.

Here's a very good site covering all GMT models:

http://www.gmtmasterhistory.com/index.html

I guess the most important aspect first is service history? Any papers?

Looks pretty good from the pic. Might have replacement hands-hard to tell from the photo. It's a reference 16750. The first GMT to feature a true quick-set date, the 16750 introduced the fast beat 3075 movement to the GMT series.

Introduced circa 80-81, early example used a matt dial sans WG surrounds (what you have). About 1984ish as Rolex moved the line to dials of gloss with WG surrounds the 16750 was so equipped.

Collectors tend to favor the earlier matt dial versions. These dials featured the distinctive "tall" coronet (again what you have).

Some have tried to use the dial from the 1675 in latter versions with gloss WG dials to create a "franken" 16750.

Won't work unless the dial feet are taken off and the dial secured to the movement (glued).

Check to see if the date feature is quick-set.

I've seen recent asking prices ranging from mid 3Kish to 5K with box&paper and all the bits.

IMHO the 16750 is the ideal vintage GMT (matt dial) in that you have only one of two true quick-set date GMTs (the other being the reference 16700, albiet with a sapphire crystal).

An interesting note is that while the depth rating on the 1675 is 50 meters the 16750 carries a 100 meter rating despite also being equipped with a lovely acryllic crystal.

The black insert is correct for the reference as it a jubliee bracelet.

Mine,

Thanks guys for the info. When I get to work tomorrow I will begin reading the site that was posted and inevitably, Im sure, ask more questions. $2500 is the price they are asking. Really feel as if I can buy cheaper, probably in the 2200 range as I have given this particular company alot of business.

$2500 for the 16750 seems like a good price, but I'm not really an expert on vintage GMTs. I got my bands at http://www.timefactors.com/ and would buy from them again if I needed. Some US places that people normally recommend are westcoasttime and gnomonwatches.

Exactly how rare are the matt dials? Im assuming not extremely as the price tag does not dictate a very rare piece. I really like the way this looks with the NATO band. This may be a somewhat vague or even unanswerable question, but how long can I expect this watch to remain reliable in the future if it has had a sketchy or even indeterminable service history? What if it has a good service history?

The matte dials are not common they where only produced for a few years on the 16750.Most where swapped out for the newer style durring services.Thye will become harder to find in the future.Service history is irrelevant once you have a good watchmaker examine the watch and see what if anything it needs. The future is more important than the past.

I believe I am going to buy. Wanting to see if I can locate service records and box/papers before I commit. I need to unload a Tag Aquaracer before I do anything else, but this may be a dont need to pass deal.

When I decided I wanted a Rolex early last year I did my research and specifically zeroed in on the 16750 model.

Not too long after I made my mind up a TRF member offered me a 16750 for $2500 and I snapped it up. It was a head only, gloss dial, gold surrounds, ding in the crystal and (unbeknownst to me) it didn't wind right so needed a proper service.

It's mine now, freshly serviced for $500 and I only take it off to wear my Speedmaster Pro once in a while. Hands down two of my favourite watches in the world...I really like this watch and don't plan to ever sell it. All else equal I suppose I would have preferred a matte dial, but only just. The gloss dial has a nice subtle bling like the new watches, but I still have that vintage plexi look which is a must for me.

$2500 for a matte dial 16750 on a bracelet is a steal. If you pass on the deal, PM me and I'll buy it.

Check out my 16750 picture thread by the way:

Nato bands provide so much variety at a low cost. Plus they are comfortable, waterproof, and a vintage Rolex's best friend.
Try timefactors.com. They provide great service. Also try: nato.blogspot.com, another great seller. Save the original jubilee and join the "Nylon Nation".
Good luck,
dP

Which of the sizes do I need to order for this watch? I guess my question is what is the mm of most of you guys that have a NATO band? 18,20,22 seem to be the 3 choices that I see the most. How wide are the lugs?

The lug size is 20mm. As far as the straps, one size fits all.

No box, papers, or any written history. Previous owner says last service was 10 years ago. Dealer has offered to do this first service for $250. I think Im going to offer 2500 including the service and see what happens.

Yep. That's the real issue that many of these dials were replaced. As Rolex uses the last dial type in the reference, the gloss/WG dials are what is used.

At that price, I wouldn't waste any time, I'd jump at it before some other schmuck took it. Great watch! And welcome to the forum!
