Anthony Farrer The Timepiece Gentleman 469-907-3695 Rolex Daytona “John Player Special” The phrase "Holy Grail" gets thrown around a lot in watch collecting these days. People use the term casually to describe watches that are great pieces but are by no means pieces that seasoned watch collectors dream of having. Every once in a while though, an actual holy grail watch turns up on the market in 100% original condition. Here at Gentleman Timepieces, we have exactly that, a Rolex Daytona Paul Newman ref. 6241, and it's not just any Paul Newman, it's the coveted "John Player Special", still in its former glory. Daytona History The predecessor of the Rolex Daytona was initially released in 1955 as the Reference 6234 Chronograph. The Daytona itself became a reality when Rolex released its first Cosmograph model, reference 6239 in 1963. The Cosmograph 6239 was released to mark Rolex becoming the Daytona International Speedway's official timekeeper the year before in 1962. As such, Rolex nicknamed it the Daytona – the name finally appeared on the 6239's dial in 1965. Paul Newman Variant The Paul Newman' exotic' variant of the Rolex Daytona has been highly coveted by collectors ever since Paul Newman, the famed racing driver, and actor, began to wear one when his wife, Joanne Woodward, gifted him a ref. 6239. These 'exotic' dial Daytonas were already rare at the time as they were slow to sell, so Rolex only produced around 2000 to 3000 of them. This limited quantity combined with a legendary ambassador has since sent collectors scrambling to their hands on a Paul Newman Daytona, even rarer still, however, is the Rolex Paul Newman "John Player Special". John Player Special It is thought that only about 400 "John Player Special" Daytonas were ever made, of which, most are 18k gold. The even rarer 14k variant is the one we have on offer. With its hallmark black and gold dial and black plastic bezel, the "John Player Special" Daytona is nicknamed after the color-scheme that it shares with the eponymous cigarettes company, John Player Special. After using the scheme on its cigarette packaging for years, John Player Special also sponsored the Lotus Formula One team during the 70s. With their black and gold Formula One car, Lotus went on to win 3 championships which forever cemented the color scheme of black and gold with triumph, winning and car racing - themes that the Rolex Daytona has already always reflected through its direct namesake, the Daytona International Speedway, and its famed ambassador, Paul Newman. Rarity and Collectability As you can see, the Rolex Paul Newman "John Player Special" Daytona is a perfect storm of collectible traits. Between its iconic color scheme, famed exotic dial, legendary provenance, and overall rarity, it has cemented its position in the watch collecting world as a true Holy Grail. With such a legendary status, it is no surprise that this watch commands a price tag that few timepieces can command. With an ever-shrinking number of examples coming to market, we here at Gentleman Timepieces have a truly once in a lifetime watch on offer here. Previous examples on the market As this watch is so rare, its market value is well documented, and it has, like all Paul Newman Daytonas, gone up. In 2002 Christie's sold a "John Player Special" for $33,000, and in 2019 Ellen DeGeneres bought one for the same price we have our example listed for, $750,000. In May 2018 Phillips sold one example on a leather strap for around $912,500 and in May 2019 they sold another example for roughly $800,000 - also on a leather strap. This stark increase in price over time reflects the vintage watch market's strength and the use of these watches as legitimate investment vehicles. By comparing our price to these auction prices and considering other market factors, we do not doubt that our example is one of the world's best current value propositions within the vintage watch market today. |
