Beginning watch collection
I am currently looking to begin collecting watches as a hobby. I love wearing them and having different kinds for different occasions.
Where I’m struggling to begin is to either buy a Rolex (sub or DJ 41 jubilee with blue dial), or use that money to get an Omega Seamaster 300m and a Tudor black bay. I like the idea of getting multiple to start out, but the DJ is incredible looking and would be very nice to wear when I have to dress up. As of now, I have an Apple Watch and a Tissot-T touch solar. Buy the Rolex. Between the DJ41 or Sub I recommend the Sub. It is a virtually fail proof choice.

The DJ41 Blue dial is a great choice, especially fluted bezel/jubilee. You can wear it with anything IMO.
Sub is also a great choice. Would prefer either one to owning both Omega and Tudor. |

A DJ or Sub would be your first real watch! Go for the Sub!

SubC was my first "nice" watch. I'm now 4 Rolexes deep in my collection, and scouting out a 5th! It's a great (expensive) hobby!

Do you need a date?
If yes I would go with a date sub, and then add a date just. If no, go Moonwatch and BB58, and then add a Rolex GMT At some point you have to go Rolex, in this hobby I think brand variety and function variety is key!

Welcome to the forum
You mentioned DJ twice in your opener so I’d say that’s what your heart wants |

I wish I could do ti all over again!!! I agree with the others and suggest you start right out with the Rolex if that is your eventual goal. You will enjoy it more than 2 other "lesser" watches.
It will be easier to add on other watches in the future than to save up for the Rolex once you have other watches.

Buy what you like best. I like some watches, the neighbor likes some and you like some.
You just have to make your own way. |

I was in a similar predicament. I bought the sub because of all the hype it gets on TRF and others. I thought it was the quintessential rolex that everyone needed. I bought it site unseen from DavidSW. After about 5 minutes the novelty wore off and I was bored of it. A few months later I happened to see a DJ41 (fluted jubilee sunburst dial) and couldnt stop thinking about how much "nicer" it was than my sub. I sold the sub one week later and bought this:
I cant emphasize this enough: buy what speaks to you and understand it might be different than TRF's current unicorn. |

Either Sub or DJ is good. Get whichever you like more. Rolex has more of a psychological advantage over Omega and Tudor than anything else. That's why most people recommend you get your Rolex first.

I'd get rolex first - then build out from there. Either choice is great - my vote is for SUB. Understated, classic, goes with anything, holds value like no other, etc etc. You can move from that position very easily if it doesn't sing to you.

Your dilemma is quite common. 2 x great watches for same as or maybe less than outlay for either Rolex. The Omega and Tudor are great watches but my guess is you really want the crown. Don’t compromise get what you really want even if you have to wait a while

It sounds like you want a Rolex. All brands have their merits but get the watch you want first or else there will always be that sense of remorse.

Which Sub or DJ ?
There’s loads of choices new or vintage. The Sub LN (lunette noir black bezel) is classic, full stop. The history of the diver speaks for itself. Is it pretty as a DJ diamond dial on jubilee? No. Will a pretty DJ stand the test of time against the Sub which has had its 50th birthday in 2003? Definitely NOT. Can and will the DJ’s compare in price in 6 months from now? No.
Rolex was a rich persons toy and many of us here are a little better off to afford one but I’m alluding to using money wisely and sadly and not sadly, certain Rolex ARE wearable investments and while ALL Subs 5508...5513... 1680.... 14060 ....16610LN and LV inc Phat4’s and then Hulks and LN ceramics are rapidly increasing in price and it make sense to have something that ordinaries and dealers will want in the near and far future. The DJ stainless steel diamond dials and bi-metals versions are pretty watches so if someone wants whatever watch they want, they should buy it. But Sub or DJ? For longevity, my money’s on the Sub. |

IMO you should not get two watches to start your collection. This is when you go for the one watch that can do it all selection, and that becomes the baseline for where you go from there. It's always better to have one that you really love, than two that you really like.

Even though you’re thinking about this in terms of a collection, I’d still advise you view that first purchase with intention and the foundation for your collection. The collection will grow as your interests evolve and as you age. |
