Help Me Decide on Roulette Date Wheel

Greetings -

Found a very nice 36mm DJ, fluted bezel, Oyster bracelet. I'm not sure of the year, but will get the full details tomorrow. I prefer the newer 3235 movement with the 70 hour power reserve, as well as the Oyster bracelet that has the EasyLink system. I believe the watch has both, but it may have the older 3125 movement.

I also noticed that the dial has markers with small Roman numerals above each marker in five minute increments around the outer ring of the dial. That's fine, but what I've read on this forum is that a dial like that typically came standard with the "roulette" date dial - alternating red/black numbers depending on whether or not the date was odd (red) or even (black).

Frankly, if it has that dial I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm a senior citizen and I'm "old school", remembering when I bought my first 36mm TT DJ in 1981 with the standard black date markings.

What is the general feeling about the roulette date wheel? Is it a positive (rare) or negative (it's rare for a reason!). This will be my final Rolex - my birthday watch marking a significant 70th celebration - I want the watch to be "the one". The seller is offering it at a good price, but maybe that's because it is indeed the roulette date and other buyers prefer the standard black date.

Any help/opinions/thoughts are welcome. I'd like to get this resolved quickly, so I thank you in advance for your help.

Congrats on the occasion you’re marking with a Rolex purchase!

The watch you describe is likely the older 1162XX Datejust. The new 126XX has no Roman railroad track markers and a coronet at 6 o’clock. The roulette date wheel isn’t too rare but it seems very popular, online at least. It might become collectible because I believe it was only ever offered on some 1162XXs. Post pics!

Roulette wheel is very cool to me. I wish it was still offered on current models.

Roulette date wheel was offered only on the 1162XX Datejust line and was linked to certain dials (black, blue with indexes, and a few arabic dials). It was a kind of heritage from the first years of the Datejust production. On today's 1262XX Datejust it isn't proposed at all I believe. On the forum it is sought after, I personally don't like it too much.

I think it's personal preference. I prefer the all black text date.

I got the new DJ36 black with all black date text. That said, if the newer movement/version had the roulette, I don't think it would have made a difference as I did like the new movement and the removal of the railroad track.

So I guess all that to say, it didn't really matter significantly to me either way.

Good luck.

There is no roulette date wheel for the new 3235 movement.

Bas - are the wheel dimensions and teeth different for 3235?

Wasn't it also offered on the white dial?

Probably it was. I should check out the dials, it was offered following a somehow misterious logic. It was fitted on the silver decorated dial with blue arab numbers, for example.
EDIT: it was fitted on white index dial for sure but not on the silver Arab. It was fitted on the bronze and black arab instead.

Thanks for the help. Turns out the seller has a model 116234-SSO - silver toned marker dial with small Roman numerals above the hour markers. No Roulette Wheel date colors.

The watch has the fluted bezel and Oyster Bracelet (with EasyLink). The seller describes it as being bought in 2017 by a friend that never wore it. He bought it from his friend, and also never wore it. It shows with tags still attached and the fluted bezel covered by the protective ring around the bezel that Rolex uses when delivering watches. His asking price is firm at $5500 - seems reasonable to me. Does the price sound reasonable to you?

My 116234 from 2017. I love the roulette date, it's a touch of something different.
