Rethinking my whole approach.

Been thinking about doing it for a while now, and with the Hulk being discontinued, figured I would cash in on the increased value.

Sold my Hulk and Batman. And it wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be.

We are in a time of our lives where the money is nice, but not necessary.

Part of the reason I sold them off is because I have three other watches: Speedy, Explorer II, Hamilton, and an IWC in the safe waiting for the birth of my daughter. All of these watches mark a significant occasion, college graduation, birth of my son and daughter, and an anniversary gift. The Hulk and Batman were impulse buys. I found myself enjoying them more than my others, so off they went.

I have found myself so caught up in the Rolex hype surrounding these hot models that I forgot to enjoy what I have. I keep thinking about what I am gonna get next and forget to live in the moment with the current lineup. I believe purging the Hulk and Batman will help me enjoy what I have and not think about what’s next. Really looking forward to wearing the IWC. Hope to add some non Rolex watches for future milestones as well. Probably Panerai and Grand Seiko spring drive.

So will I regret my decision in the future? Possibly. But they are just watches, and I already have a decent collection.

Just a rant. Anyone else feel the same?

Does not sound like a rant to me. If the watches were not singing to you, then you did the right thing.

It looks like you are a mature grown up, so you won't regret it. This hype around Rolex stainless steel watches is taking away the fun from a lot of people who ended up being obsessed with certain references just because they are difficult to obtain. It looks like you went past that phase!

I don’t believe you’re going to regret it. These are just watches, even the ones that mark significant occasions.

As values creep upwards, in many cases crazily so, I find myself asking the same question. I haven’t quite hit that point yet.

It happens. Earlier this year I sold off three Rolex models from my collection. Two of them were just safe queens. I don’t miss them because although I liked them I determined they simply didn’t fit my personal style. I still really like a lot of watches, but I’ve learned to only buy the ones that I not only *like* but also look good on my wrist and reflect my personal sense of style. Those are the watches I’m most happy with and look forward to wearing. I do like the new OP 41mm turquoise model and hope I get the call in the coming weeks/months.

If you are not wearing them, no reason to keep them. They probably fetched a pretty penny. Buy something else that you enjoy. Hope you didn’t buy a tech stock yesterday!

Haha no, but I’ve been kicking myself for not buying Tesla a while back.

Yeah, never live with any regrets and I doubt you will here. Life is too short and if you aren't actually enjoying a piece to the max then move on (as you did).

The beautiful thing is, once you move past Rolex you start to see so many great pieces and brands to experience that might've been overlooked previously.

Exactly! I found myself obsessed with Rolex. If I wasn’t wearing one, I was thinking about it. I do still have the Explorer II, but this gives me the opportunity to enjoy other brands.

You sold the hype. That tells me you speak for yourself and you bring your own perspective. Watches come and go. Having self worth thats not measured in having a status symbol on your wrist is what real confidence and style is all about. Find something that speaks to you and enjoy the journey!

I sold my BLNR for a huge profit as well after purchasing it msrp. The hype was actually turning me off on the watch! Don’t miss that watch at all.

I would’ve done the same thing if I owned a Hulk. You have the opportunity to more than double your money for what?? Just for buying it at the right time? If I found a sucker to give me double msrp for anything I bought it’d be gone. Minus the sentimental pieces

No offence, but I’d dump any ceramic 6d if I was well above what I paid.

There’s so many ceramic fakes, so much runway to have 20-30 years of these things being pumped out, and the people who wear these ceramic fakes make me not want to associate with Rolex 2.0. It’s creeped into its own subgroup.

I’m now good with my modern Rolexeses going forward, might add an OP coral if there to wear out — and look forward to adding more lesser idolized brands — even more Tudorseses.

Enjoy the pieces that mean something to you. Looking at my wrist and the memories/thoughts certain watches bring back is priceless.

Hat goes off for even rethinking your approach. I don’t think you will regret it since they were impulse buys. ~ Pleb

I'll be the naysayer of the group.

Whether they were impulse buys or not, if you were enjoying them, why sell?

I understand buying watches because of meaning (heck, I bought a Tudor BBN to commemorate my 1st born), but these could have eventually becomr heirloom pieces and replaced the others as well. Tastes change - buying he Tudor for my son doesn't mean it HAS to stay; pretty sure he's going to be happy getting my other watches too.

It just doesn't make sense to me to sell things that you seemed to love, but to each their own!

EVERYTHING is "just a phase".

We like, we buy, we sell, we can't afford, now we can, we buy some more, circumstances change, we sell, we get older and wonder what the hell we wanted 20 of these things for anyway, we sell, then we see something we like, we buy, then we sell.......

No sense overthinking it.

Then we realize overthinking is just a phase so we.........

Selling when market is high is a good move. Everything has a price.

I absolute love my first Rolex, 166710LN which I bought new from AD 10 years ago and always say I'd keep for life. But if someone offered me 20k or 30k for it now, it would be very hard for me to say no..

I’ve never been one for hype myself.

If anything it sends me running in the opposite direction.

Everyone seems to scrabble more and more these day’s to ‘stand out’ by looking and having the same stuff as everyone else.

Give me one offs, customs or bespoke any day of the week !

Good for you and I will probably do the same if this craziness continues. I like variety but the whole issue with Rolex and availability is turning me off the brand. While I have a decent collection, Rolex is all I wear except for the occasional rotation of one of my different brands.
Sadly all the grey pricing is just driving me from the brand. I hadn’t looked at pricing in a while but $28 for a SS Daytona, are you nuts. If It was a more normal product;buy at MSRP, wear it like you stole it, value drops like other watches so you don’t care, buy another when you need some variety, rinse and repeat. Doing that at MSRP ($10k ish) is a whole lot easier then the mess it is now.

I have a date sub, hulk, DSSD and a Bluesy. As these prices go through the roof I just need to figure out which one to keep.

Good for you. It seems like this move was well thought out. In the future if you want another watch then buy one.
