Saw Platinum / Diamond Day-Date Yesterday

I was at an AD in Chicago yesterday and saw a platinum Day Date with Diamond bezel for an astounding $81K. It was a beautiful watch, but would you pay that much money for one watch? I could see myself buying several watches, one for each day of the week, instead of just one, for that price. Any thoughts???

I agree. It's crazy to me - the mark-up on the precious metals and diamonds on Rolex is nuts. I'd have to have LOTS of money before I considered spending that much on a watch just because of its hardware.

But then again - I can hardly fathom spending 20-30k on a solid gold DD/Daytona/GMT-II/whatever either...

I personally wouldn't, but there are some here on this forum who have a very similar watch. It's to each his or her own. I couldn't justify half my income going to a watch to myself (I don't have a spouse so no need to justify it to her). Besides, I have too many other toys that I spend money on as well (cars would be one example).

I have a DD in YG with the standard 8 round 2 baguette dial....to be honest I wanted a non diamond dial eventually....but when I got the call about the one I have I went to see it and fell inlove with it.....it wasn't new...in fact it wasn't far short of 20 years old, but it had hardly been worn....the YG DD has massive personal significance to me.....I was also working in a country which I was due to leave and I had cash that was going to be "tricky" to take with me.....it seemed like a good option....the watch has never been converted back into that cash and I hope it will never need to be.....each one has a story......when I got back home I had it valued at an AD for more than twice what I paid......sometimes there is method in the madness of buying something like this......sometimes there isn't, sometimes it's done with the heart and not the head.........suppose it all depends on your individual situation.....

More than a few times...

I would love to own a DD one day....yes it's difficult now to imagine spending that much on one but I hope that in the future it won't be such an 'intimidating' thought! Of course I'm not talking about the $80k variety as the OP states.....

Any DD is a very classy, classic watch! WG, YG, RG, Platinum... DDII with diamond bezel to cover up its fatness

Just one mad thought...not sure if anyone has ever come up with this before......take a SS watch....run it over with a steam roller or smash it with a sledge hammer, in a few seconds it become totally worthless......do the same to a Gold or Platinum one which has some diamond settings.......it is still worth something no matter how much damage is done.....the movement is worthless.....the rest has lost a lot of its value....but not all of it.....in fact the more diamonds it has the higher the remaining value will be....

There's a local used and custom jewelry shop near my house - the owner has some type of funky hybrid stainless DD with diamonds all over it (much like Yume's). He was explaining to me that parts of it are real (movement/dial) but everything else was SS (case, bracelet). They've got quite a bit of used jewelry (including Rolex) and a team of custom jewelers so I don't really doubt his story.

That being said, with all the aftermarket stuff on it, it's not a bad looking piece.

Me too on the DD vs DDII Jen....here's the one I fell for....1984 model....single quick....honestly it was like brand new....the inside of the bracelet wasn't even marked by the folding part of the clasp.....I was told in the country I was in at the time that yellow gold just wasn't hip enough....weird...

Yeah, what something will be worth once I smash it always comes in to my decision making.

So you don't buy with a little insurance fraud in mind?

Well, they are insured to their FULL retail replacement value. Not including discounts, etc.

If I had money to burn, sure I would spend 81k on a watch. It's all relative.
