Coke Addict

Not that coke, I'm talking about the soda.

With my healthy regime now in place I have to cut out the fizzy drinks and replace with green tea or water.

After cycling to work (3 miles) yesterday I realised how unfit I was and also that simple cycling is not enough to get me feeling healthier again.

I've therefore put together a diet plan supplemented by vitamins.

That means giving up my beloved ice cold coke and other soda drinks.

Expect at least bad moods and sulks for a minimum of two weeks as I go cold turkey on my sugar addictions.

To help shift my soft drink dependancy, I did a little research...

In many states in the USA the highway patrol carries two gallons of
"well known soft drink brand" in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident

You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of "well known soft drink brand" and it will be gone in two days (meat will completely dissolve).

To clean a toilet: Pour a can of "well known soft drink brand" into the toilet bowl and let it sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in "well known soft drink brand" removes stains from vitreous china.

To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a
rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminium foil dipped in "well known soft drink brand".

To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of
"well known soft drink brand" over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in "well known soft drink brand" to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of "well known soft drink brand"into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The "well known soft drink brand" will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

The active ingredient in "well known soft drink brand" is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about 4 days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.

To carry "well known soft drink brand" syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for Highly corrosive materials.

The distributors of "well known soft drink brand" have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years!

Worrying?

Luckily since I was young kid, I hate soda drink of any kind.
Somehow just hate the soda feeling in my tongue

Now the only soda-drink I drink is tonic water,
mixed with Gin of course!

Congrats you will feel better for ditching the sugary stuff, Rosemary will not let the kids drink it, (don't let William get a taste for it either), you will reduce your chances of getting diabetes.
Don't replace it with the marketing hype of diet varieties they have hidden problems like aspartame.
Tea, water and beer should keep you on the straight and narrow and help you lose weight

No beer!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going clean old chap. Only fruit, vegs, pulses, white meat and fish and brown foods.

No sugar, white refined foods or heavy carbs.

J

PS The shop next door to us at work has Coke deliveries every other day and the two old girls who used to run it said the Coke rep once told them that if you are going to drink it, drink the red stuff...the diet and zero versions may have less sugar but they have much much worse stuff in.

Be ready for a caffeine withdrawal headache if you're going totally off. I quit caffeine as a freshman in college and had an unshakable headache for about 4 days. The only thing that helped was drinking a LOT of water to help flush the system, and I was around a gallon a day for a while. I can still slug a quart in one pull.

I wish you luck. After putting on the Freshman 15 in college, I was sitting at 265. Granted that I've never been a small guy, but 265 for the guy who boxed and played football at 245 was intolerable. I cut soda entirely, no caffeine, and lunch became cans of Progresso soup. Couple that with lifting like I was in my playing days, and I dropped that 15 in about a month. I'm now at 175, and can actually go longer and harder in the gym than I ever did, even back then.

If you want to fold in some cardio but don't want to go to the gym, I have a suggestion. It's silly, but get a Wii and WiiFit. Believe it or not, that thing is actually one of the better cardio machines I have ever used. There's also a range of strength training exercises, and it monitors your progress. It also monitors your weight and BMI, so you can tell what you're losing.

Nothing wrong with a bit of the other Eddie...I doubt I have to tell you that!!!!!

Truth is, as a teen and in my early twenties I didn't look after myself very well.

I made some dumb mistakes and I've had to pay for them both mentally and physically.

My respiratory system is wrecked and as I've put weight on over the years, this has only made things worse.

I've felt like crap lately, lungs shallow and heart pounding.

I don't eat that much that's bad for me but I do drink loads of sugary drinks and the odd beer and I hardly exercise.

I feel at death's door.

I really want to watch my boy grow up and maybe even give him a little brother or sister.

Now's the time.

Most everyone takes some allowance with their body and what they put in it during their teens and 20's. It reminds me a bit of the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor collector on the Back to the Future Delorean. Just empty whatever trash you have in it and it uses it just fine. It all changes as you get older and you have to be a little more thoughtful about what you put in it. But the body knows the way to health and if you just give it what it needs, it repairs amazingly well. Cut out the processed foods and sugar and you're mostly there. Add in some real exercise and it gets supercharged. Build up in exercise gradually and you'll be pushing yourself in no time and recovering even faster. A little steadfastness in building a few new habits and you'll be a new person in just a matter of weeks.

And the best thing is giving up the sodas for lots of water and some tea. Later when you have the occasional soda, you'll enjoy it more. When you don't feel good, it's difficult to have quality time with your family. Improve that and everything else improves around you. It's really pretty easy.

Cheers Kevin...

My resp' damage is permanent as is damage to my gums and my liver and kidneys and also other bits like the septum. My lungs have 20% less capacity than before I was into my twenties.

The stuff that went into my body in my teens and 20's, well let's just say it probably bleached my veins from the inside :

There is hope for you after all ole' LaChiva76.

I am still here after treating this old body like a rental car. Pushing that ole eight ball around for ten years was quite a hard trip.

Hi Jim

I have every faith you can do it. I have had epilepsy since I was 11 which is from the early 70's. I carried on trying to be one of the lads but every now and then the wheels fell off, but playing sport meant I sort of watched what I ate but since I hit 30 and then 40 I have really watched what I ate and drank.

I cut out beer decades ago, not that I wanted to but all of a sudden it went wrong when I had one so ..it went. Fizzy stuff also. There nothing like a cup of tea or a glass of filtered water. Beats the sugar any day.

I have always cycled and its a great way of keeping in shape, even if its indoors on a Turbo trainer. Outdoors is best though plenty of fresh air

Then you can take a trip to your skweeze!

Best wishes my friend

Si

I gave up softdrinks as a new years resolution after consuming a fair amount of pop on a daily basis. We had a BBQ at work at the end of February, and I had a can of Pepsi cause the water fountain was broken. It was weird, made my mouth numb, stomach felt weird afterwards. After that I've only had a couple of rye and gingers here and there. Probably one of the better decisions I've made. Dropping the softdrinks, drastically changing my diet and occassional exercise allowed me to drop about 30lbs by mid march, but I've started breaking some of the rules I set for myself, and have put 5lbs back on. Weathers getting nice though, and I just bought myself a new road bicycle, so I cant wait to get out riding again.

I constantly have nightmares that I had a drink of Coke and ruined my whole fast, or a bite of chocolate and it brings me to tears. It's a ridiculous thing to worry about, but every time I wake up from one, I breathe a deep sigh of relief.

You'll feel much better for it Jim My wife Loulou, has MS and we changed our diet a few years ago, to get rid of wheat and dairy etc, to help combat her chronic fatigue. It took a while to work, but she feels much better these days. It shouldn't surprise people that if you eat crap, you feel crap.
Good luck mate

Meh Cake doesn't do it for me.

If it was a bacon cheeseburger and a cold coca cola I'd be climbing the walls.

Boy, I can relate. Hubby drinks way too much of that stuff. Thankfully, his bicycle is in the shop this week getting a tune up, and once his back surgeon clears him on Thursday - he's going to start biking. He's even mentioned doing Pilates to strengthen his core!

On a hot day, he can go through three cans of the stuff in nothing flat!

Jim, good for you!!!

Caroline, Dave's the same say. He hides a stash of Pepsi in the basement and I hear the tops popping all evening.

I don't drink it very often - seriously, the medicine I take makes cola drinks taste funny - a little bit like dirt. Now, my lime slushes are another story, and I'm afraid to say they probably are full of HFCS. Maybe I need to find out if the bigwigs at Sonic will release that information.... but I think I already know....

Jim, I'm proud of you for doing this! William will have a fit and fun daddy and you'll get to see him grow up and make a life of his own. Good for you!

Icon5 Has anyone mentioned druggists?

Dad would have a "waxed container" of the C-word on his shelf at his pharmacy to dispense for nausea.

Never did he have a container of the P-word.

Because of this, when I choose a cola, its Coke, though I thoroughly dislike the intake of high fructose corn syrup!

I just researched (? searched : ) that Costco and Walmart are selling Mexican Coke and that its made with pure cane sugar! http://www.seriouseats.com/2007/05/c...ican-coke.html

The formula for Coke was created by pharmacist John Pemberton in 1885, and had coca leaves as an ingredient.

Ever watched the Mythbusters Cola episode? They debunked most of the Cola myths Why not go for Coke Zero? No sugar, no calories. I only drink Coke on very warm days, usually with lots of ice. To end my nonsense, I present you this:
