Gutted! - New SBGN005

First time owner of a GS.

Today I took delivery of a new SBGN005 and at just before 1.30 it stopped, I reset it and it stopped again at a couple of minutes to 2... both times the second hand stopped at 29 seconds. The dealer I bought it from haven't got anymore in stock and are going to call me tomorrow with an update on how long it will be before I get another one.

Is there comment faults with these or have I been unlucky?

Thank you in advance for any input.

Don't take offence at my question; was the spring fully wound?

I believe it is a 9F quartz, so there is no spring.

Edit- somebody else beat me to it!

I'd say you've been very unlucky. I've never heard of a 9F going wrong before.

Update: the dealer rang me this morning and said that they have spoke to the GS Service centre and they want it in to check and they will then send a new one out once the fault is confirmed... but couldn’t confirm whether they have one in stock to immediately replace.

Whilst at the dealer the watch stopped twice so something is seriously wrong with this watch.

First I've ever heard of this - will hopefully be hopefully a smooth fix/replacement process. Please keep us updated.

Update: according to the dealer they’ve spoke to the GS service centre and they’ve said they want it on test for a week before they make any decisions. Not really what I wanted to hear but I guess I have to go with it for now. If I don’t get a positive answer in a week I will request a full refund and wait for one to be available at another dealer. Disappointed! :(

Forgive my ignorance but do Grand Seiko Dealers not have the tools to replace a battery?

Or do all GS quartz with batteries have to be sent to Japan for replacement (and testing)?

If i'm totally honest I have no confidence in the dealer where I bought it from. I believe the service centre is in the UK to where it is now.

I would also question a brand new GS needing a new battery but who knows that may be the case. But if that is the case GS would surely have replaced the battery then sent it back as opposed to saying they want to keep it on test?

Are they testing it for authenticity??

I have an SBGN005 bought new straight from one of just a few authorized dealers in the US (there aren't that many). It's keeping perfect time.

You would think that a battery change would be the first thing, just to eliminate this possibility before having it sent in for weeks on end

I'd love to see an attempt at a counterfeit GS. Lots of luck with that with GS-level dial and case finishing.

If this is a low battery, I've replaced the battery in both of my 9Fs myself without a problem. It's definitely a DIY if you have the tools.

I'm guessing that they want to observe it over several days with a new battery, to make sure that nothing else is amiss. Hopefully your patience will be rewarded with a perfectly functioning watch.

Not all watch dealers have watchmakers on the premises or the correct tools to work on a watch. Why would they trust a salesman to work on a watch?

At a pinch you could do it yourself with the right battery, a $10 caseback opener and case holder. I might have done mine myself but I needed to go to the Seiko Service Centre anyway, so I took it along and they did the battery change and pressure test (with printed results) free of charge.

don't they have a low battery indicator, wherein the second hand moves only every 2 seconds ?

Correct. Both my 9F61 and 9F62 do this.

Update: just had notification that the watch has been sent back from Seiko to the dealers and I will receive it tomorrow. They can’t tell me what the issue was as the lady dealing with it at the dealer is on holiday... I will follow up on her return. Fingers crossed all is ok!

Update: it’s back and all seems to be ok. I will follow up and find out what the issue was and report back... disappointed that I’ve got to wait for the lady to be back off holiday but determined to find out what’s happened.
