Need some help! Rolex 5056
need assistance in locating same dial. Of course its rare! Just like every ebay post that says VTG.
And I know it is a 10.5 right? also is it okay to put generic mainspring in, I know new old stock is what I need. What would be the part number then? |

Generally speaking, you would not want to replace the dial. You would have it properly cleaned and keep it original to retain the value and charm of your watch.
Using a generic mainspring is more acceptable than replacing the dial/hands

When you have a dial like that you never touch it because if you do ... you're running the risk of making it worse. Just carefully handle and put it back in.
I always try and explain these things to folks and I'm often turned a deaf ear or ignored...but...here goes. You have a late 40's shock resisiting 710 there. Mainspring for the 700-710...you won't FIND an NOS mainspring more than likely. No one in the WORLD will care if it's a genuine spring or not and Rolex didn't make the spring in the first place. Your main issue is going to be finding one that makes your balance happy. Too strong and you get way too much amplitude and there is a tendency to Rebank or "knock" with hitting 360 degrees...too weak and it dies in the verticals...mostly these watches of THIS era...run pretty well. It has seen improvements and if it hasn't been run into the ground, the staffs usually fair pretty well and they don't break because of the schock mech. Because of this the balances remain pretty well poised and you get a good result. You may have to try a few mainsprings and even GENERIC ones are hard to find. If you don't do a FULL teardown and overhaul of tha movement...you can't really tell where you are with it. I hope that is what you are planning. Just putting a mainspring in...not a good idea. |

thank you for the insight RWT. I do not plan on replacing the dial. I am curious on how many super shock-resist dials are out there. Ive seen only one other that was in really bad condition. thank you also I sourced a crown tube and stem. It needs it it will no longer screw down
