Why do watches look so much better on other people?

I don't know what it is but I find I always think that watches look better on other people. I sometimes see people wearing watches I have had and sold and think, it never looked that good on my wrist, wish I would have kept it. Surely it can't just be me. Is it because you see the watch at a different angle? Or maybe if ots from further away? Really don't know.

I've always thought,

I suppose sometimes you can be too close to something to take it all in, like being stuck behind a lorry on a country road

I agree completely. I have had (and sold) probably half a dozen Datejusts, and always sell them because I think they look too small on me. Yet when I see them, even on big guys, they look great.....who knows!

Still really want a GMT master IIc but am going to keep my Sub LV (after seeing it on the wrist of James Martin, Chef) not just its on him but seeing someone else wearing it it looks amazing!!! So won't have any money for a couple of weeks, if yours is still knocking about I will drop you a PM, will be in London soon so we may be able to do a cash deal.

My wife adjust my collection and wears them and it looks great on her. I find myself feeling like I'm wearing two watches when we're out on a date or at an AD :-)

Perception, I guess. The grass is always greener...
Try putting yours on the other wrist. I swear it looks better, or again, at least that's MY perception.

Try looking at it in the mirror and that should help. Do this at all available opportunities and all will be well.

Hi Jay Kay:
That feeling of yours sounds weird, but it is a good observation.
I have felt the same some times, and have given it a bit of thought.
I got the conclussion, that it is a matter of attitude and general view of the other people you see wearing a Rolex (or any other brand of watch).
As a matter of fact, it also happens with clothes. You see a fellow with some kind or brand of trousers, or of a polo shirt, and run to a shop and try a similar brand and color, an looks horrible on you. It happened to me many times.

When you look at your wrist, you get a very partial view of your body, and your watch occupies a very large portion of what you see, and worst of all, from a rather akward angle. You can´t get a whole view of your person, except if you look at a mirror.

Then, as I said before, I feel its a matter of personality and attitude, and how it looks a little aspect of your clothing in that general context.
When you see a picture of Steve Mc Queen wearing his Sub, or Pal Newman wearing his Daytona, you surely feel that you´ll never reach that degree of coolness, given the very same watch!

That´s my point of view only, and I never care about that, just matters if I like the watch I own.
kind regards, Abel

Nope. Tried the mirror deal and still feel a bit clownish when I wear my YMII....albeit a financially stable clown.

It happens, also to me, i suggest changing wrist for a wile, it can helps, so you feel like something strange on your different wrist and you look at that wonderful watch you own.!!

Yup totally agree with you! I just bought a Yacht-Master a watch that I have been drooling over for so long. I remeber everytime I seen someone wearing it my eyes would atomatically lock in.
Now that I have it... I dont think it looks all that great on me.
Maybe you should have your spouse wear your watch for a day then see how good it really looks?

This is funny, happens to me too. When I see someone else wearing a Sub, I think "wow that is one really fabulous looking watch", but somehow my Sub just seems like a normal watch....

I've found that watches, clothes, etc..... always look better on someone else. I think it's an optical illusion. But I have never been fashion conscious so I do not care what others think or do. As you get older these little things become less important and you do what you want!!!

i agree about the datejust. i went to a party and the whole way there i was thinking "this explorer is starting to look a little small". then i saw three guys, all bigger than i am, all wearing 36mm rolex and they all looked great. i think it is a matter of perspective.
