Love in the photos / hate on the wrist

Mine are:

1. Daytona. They look so good. I obsessed and bought one and immediately returned it (d'oh).


2. Cellini moon phase. At this point I just know it's not going to work for me. I do still look at the photos though


3. Non rolex bonus: JLC reverso grande GMT. Another "d'oh" purchase I made once upon a time

I appreciate the honesty of this thread topic. For me, there are so many cool looking watches out there, but a number of them look bigger on my wrist than I’d like. For example, most of the Tudor Black Bay collection, including the very cool looking GMT. Rolex Skydweller and Yachtmaster II. Many G Shocks. The adage “try before” you buy is so important...too back that is not possible with a number of the popular watches out there.

The grande reverso is very very small. I'm too used to rolex 40mm. And I have fairly large wrists.

If you can pull it off its such a cool watch. Especially on the bracelet which I think epitomizes the classic sports watch.

I’ve never actually bought a watch I didn’t like in photos, but have definitely tried a few on off the back off seeing photos that I liked.

A couple of examples for me are the TT blue sub, tried many times and just doesn’t work for me.

And the AP15500, actually very nearly bought this one without trying it on and luckily a local dealer had it in stock, so I tried it on and realised wasn’t for me straight away.

And strangely I still think they look great in photos!

Had that with DJ41 two tone Rose gold with sundust dial that we were seriously looking at for my wife. Loved everything about the watch in pictures, but in person, it was just not as good as pics.

Its funny I also did a catch and release with that one. It looks so great that I still consider buying another one. I love all the amazing features all crunched into a small case.

The size and fit are actually not an issue for me. The killer was..... the chopped up dial. Its funny but somehow looking at the date window that was just plunked down right on top of the 7 made me crazy. I wanted to scream at the designers, just skip the 7!!! Why bother with it if 90 % of it is gone?!

Happened to me with the AP 15400 white dial. Looked so great in photos but on the wrist the dial is washed out, it’s way too big (7 inch wrist) and I couldn’t stand the flat areas that surround the bezel. Those areas always looked discolored and smudged.

I echo this sentiment. The Daytona is the Tom Cruise of Rolex in that it seems to have much more of a presence from afar (appears to be normal size on screen) than it does on the wrist (5'9 in real life).

Daytona for me too. Waited years for one. Got it and initially tried to love it and just never meshed. Traded it for a VC Overseas and never looked back.

A deepsea is in my near future and I am excited and terrified. My AP diver fits my wrist appropriately so I think the DSSD will work. At least I hope it will...

The designers cut the "4" "5" and the "7" they left the "2" off the dial completely. Mechanical watches are an artistic expression, and that's the way the artist saw the dial. To me that's what makes so many brands interesting.

Very comfortable to wear but an inscrutable, busy face at normal size and viewing distances. Then there are the pushers. Several manufacturers have figured out how to have 100M water resistance on chrono's without screw-down pushers. Why not Rolex? I can understand that they might be part of the aesthetic and lend an especially toolish vibe but are also a PITA. The whole thing is just too fiddly.

It was an 18238 Day Date for me. I had loved the watch for years, worked a deal trading a 116610 to get one back in 2011. Wore it a few times and it just did not sit well on my wrist, was never comfortable for me. I kept it for a couple of years and finally traded it for a 16623 with a serti dial. Completely understand the desire and then disappointment. Cheers

I think SDs, vintage 36mm DJs and DDs are all so classic and beautiful, but seem a bit thick and stubby on my wrist.

Daytonas fit my wrist like a glove.

To me it’s 5 digit watches. Look great but doesn’t feel good anymore.
Oddly I don’t have the same feeling with 4 digit watches.

Sky dweller. I think it’s stunning in pictures but there’s no way on my 6.25” wrist. Was surprised how big it was in person

Anything over 40mm looks disproportionate on my wrist. When I bought my submariner, I tried a whole bunch of different dive watches. While many looked fantastic on line or in the shop, on the wrist, the submariner was the only one that felt right.

Yes internet advertising make a lot of things seem more appealing such is the skill with lighting and composition. Whilst we all view with different size screens and DPI. Hard to get a constant.

Numerous watches I can think of look a lot better in pics off the wrist than they do actually look when worn in the wrist.
Once you start blending metals, styles, dials and proportions to the human arm, it can change how a watch looks completely.

100%. Had and sold two Daytonas; slow learner I guess. Add no date, which I now know is a must for me.
