SS Daytona or PM Oysterflex

Hi, i have owned my SS Daytona for a couple of years that I patiently waited for and bought from an AD at MRRP. A friend of mine has a WG Daytona on Oysterflex which I recently saw & thought it was really smart. Originally this would have been out of my budget however with the current value of the SS it's actually now an affordable jump to sell the SS and move to the PM Oysterflex,

I wondered if anyone else has had this dilemma & general thoughts on it?

Thanks.

I think the WG OF would be the easy choice for me.

As you have found, it has quite some depth to it. Feels very special on the wrist and despite ignoring it for quite some time and adding some other Daytona’s first, I bought it last year and it very quickly became one of my favs if not my fav or perfect 1 watch.

I like it because it looks like a simple steel watch on rubber. Nobody notices it really but I do and it looks and feels very special and that is exactly how I like it.

Love the dial way more than the steel variants. Super comfortable, lots of weight and very immune from damage.

I love the look of the Oysterflex and have heard they are very comfortable to wear. I also like the casual look of the band but feel it would look good with business wear.

I sold my 116500 after buying the 116519 OF as the 500 wasn’t getting any wrist time.

I regret selling the 500 as i didn’t really need to and it’s a really great watch. But if i could only have one, it would be the 519 OF no question.

I personally much prefer the look of the stainless steel Daytona. It's a classic. A gold watch on a rubber strap seems like something that a rapper would wear. Not my style.

I think I'd still go with a SS Daytona as my only Daytona. The OF is gorgeous but the OF may be limiting, whereas the SS can be used towards different environments

Put your SS Daytona on rubberB for a few months before you decide.

For me if it is WG Daytona I would pick blue dial with full bracelet. I think it looks a lot more elegant and still can go with everything.

The WG OF is a stunning watch. I’ll have to start by saying that I’m still in the honeymoon phase with my SS Daytona so I’m probably biased. But if you can, you should have both. You really can’t go wrong with one over the other as I find both stunning timepieces, but if we’re nitpicking, WG is a softer metal than stainless steel and the SS will probably stand the test of time more gracefully. Having said that, I’d jump on a WG OF if I find one available

Personally, I don't like the oyster flex and find it uncomfortable on my wrist.

Therefore, I went SS Daytona

I have the DaytonaC and love the 519 OF. Both can coexist, and would add if possible. Otherwise, I’d probably keep the SS if forced to pick one.

Check out this post. Probably can scratch the itch for a fraction of the money

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=559891

Or if you're open to modding, you can do as this guy who put the 116519 dial on his SS Daytona. Completely reversible. Then, you could do the Oysterflex mod too and essentially have 2 watches in 1.

Though you could just stick with the SS and not be bothered altogether :p

I have thought about getting a gold band for my 16518, but part of me thinks adding another watch may be the smarter move in terms of value.

I've owned, or own, them all. 116519ln is amazingly special and here's why:

1. Daytona's are the best sports chronographs for daily wear.
2. The white gold feels amazing and is protected by a bulletproof ceramic bezel.
3. OF bracelet is the most comfortable way to wear a watch and keeps this bad boy under the radar.

IMO, the most important quality of a watch is how great it is relative to what the wearer knows and likes. This watch is so extra, but the white gold keeps that between Rolex and myself.

At MSRP The SS 116500 for sure. If paying gray prices, I would choose the OF

SS Daytona or PM Oysterflex

Yes! Or see posts about putting on oysterflex. But I think Everest or RubberB is actually more comfortable than oysterflex.

You could use your current SS clasp. Try that before trading.

I own a 116519LN. If PM is what you really want, you can leverage the value in your SS to get there. But I’d try yours on straps first. You may find you are as happy with it as you would be with WG.

And consider RubberB or Everest. Lots of ways to get the look you are going for. I prefer Everest for comfort.

The OEM oysterflex straps are (sadly) not as comfortable for me as Everest. The little baffles on the back of the oysterflex seem to dig in, no matter how I adjust the 116519LN. I’ve even tried adding another 1/2 link and all positions of the clasp pins. And I’ve tried the various lengths of oysterflex, with the AD patiently swapping them so I could try them all.

Some days it’s Ok. Some days the baffles bother me.

Good luck.

Thanks folks for some really helpful views and advice.....i have a daily wearer so the 519 would be my weekend / days off and I can only really justify either the 519 or SS. Great replies so far

Many thanks

Add the OF from an AD first and have both in the stable for a little while. Then you can make a clear decision on which is the keeper based on your first hand experience.

I like the 519 dial but am not very keen on the OF (sold my 518 after a few months) so my choice would be the SS. Nothing can beat the oyster bracelet.

Im fortunate enough to have both.
I wear the WG much more than the SS as I find it much more versatile/casual.
The SS looks fantastic and I tend to wear it more for special occasions. Both are great/different watches and I would struggle to choose one over the other

I have them both too, and much prefer the WG OF.

That is a tough one and it comes down to personal choice. I prefer the SS to the OF and would get a quality rubber strap for the SS and see how it works.

I have both black and white ss and WGOF. Black sits. White the wife wears and I wear the WG.

WGOF is by far my favorite but I would also never sell the white ss. Black meh. Wouldn’t miss it. Keep both if you can.

Although attractive, there is something about a watch in its native or original form that steers me away from the Oysterflex band. As a result, 116500 would be my choice.
