Well mechanically the engine the same in both myself not a huge fan of the Cyclops so I would choose the SD.But you must try both on only you can choose the one you like most. The Sub is the classic Rolex but IMHO the SD is just that slightly more exclusive not so many of those around.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum. 1) I would go SD as rumor has it that they are discontinued. 2) You don't see as many around the traps. 3) you can swim down to 4000ft. 4) you can beat off potential muggers with it. 5) It also looks good on a strap or NATO (sorry JJ). Buy it ...enjoy wearing it. There ....I'm done now.

I've got both, and don't like one better than the other. In fact, I sold the first SD because I never wore it, but have purchased another already.
Like has already been said, the lack of Cyclops is a draw, at least for me. I would rather nobody notice I'm wearing a Rolex, and the cyclops tends to be a give-away. Also, anybody who knows watches will know it's a Rolex, so there really is no hiding. Finally, you'll be much less likely to see another SD out there 'in the wild', but Subs are everywhere. Good luck.

I'd go with the Sea Dweller. Clean crystal, no humps or bumps, and they have been discontinued.

Before I joined I thought the SD looked odd with that tiny date and no cyclops...I actually thought it seemed liek the Sub's poorer relation. Over the past couple of years my opinion has changed greatly. In fact if I was presented with a buy option today that included the LV sub, The Sd and the GMT II BLRO...I'd struggle to choose. As Eddie says also, the SD is often talked about being a retired series. If you can get the latest Model possible and keep it looked after, you'll have what could be possibly deemed a rare classic! Good luck with whatever you choose, both are tremendous timepieces! J |

I have both, but like the 16610 (Sub Date) a little more, as basically, it is lighter and more comfortable. But, the SD is a great watch also ! Try 'em both on and see which one you like.

I have to agree with my good friend Eddie, get the SD. The only thing I could add is that the SD is also not as common as the sub date, which is a huge bonus for me. Best of luck with your decision.

I'd get - and got - the Sea-Dweller. It's chunky and funky and as others have said here, just a little less common.

Thank you for all your input so far and welcoming me to the forum. It seems a great place to be.
Looking at everyone's feedback so far it definitely seems there is more of a push for the sea-dweller. Does anyone have any pics or comparison pics please? Hitman |

I'd go for the Sea Dweller. I am not a huge fan of the cyclops and I prefer the weight of the SD.

SD v Sub Date
I tried a SD maybe 5 years ago when I was thinner and it did not sit well on my wrist being far too tall and heavy, I thereafter wore a Sub instead. Since then I have obviously eaten too much and put on a few kilos and my current watch is an SD, which now sits well and does not seem nearly as tall or heavy.
I would suggest that you place both on your wrist and try them out prior to the decision making, one will feel better than the other. And should your AD have a Yachtmaster, try that too and feel the difference between that and a Sub, it is the most comfortable watch I have ever worn. Good luck in your choice. Rolexroz |

Price
£3980 in the UK and they are normally not too keen on discounting as they know it is a dead model and bound to appreciate in time.
A few hundred quid less from some dealers/watch enthusiasts. |

I prefer the Sea-Dweller because so many others wear the Sub

And another thing, a lot of AD's hung onto what they assumed were the last of the SD's supplied from last August onwards, these were M serial numbered watches. The same AD's are now selling their M models as newly arrived and replacing them, for their own collection, with the most recent V serial numbered watches. All M's cost 3200 - 3600 when first available, only the V's are (make that should be) at the latest price.

You can say that same about the current Sub Model 16610. It should be replaced in 2010 by a new model and therefore will be a "collectors".
You basically have to go with what you like better.. but the feedback also is that the SD is heavier and thicker. |

Had a SD 4 years ago and regretted selling it almost straight away. I bought another 6 weeks ago or so and this time its for keeps. Both are lovely watches as you know but personally I prefer the SD for the "no cyclops" option but each to their own...either way enjoy!

Both are great choices...
Try them both on and see which one feels better on your wrist. The Sub is a very comfortable fit... the SD is a bit heavier and taller on the wrist... My SD gets a lot of wrist time... And here is my SUB...

The trick is finding an SD in the UK shops now, especially a V serial.

Tough choice, I couldn't decide either for quite awhile. Between the 2, the Sub always felt and looked a little nice to me. So...... instead, I got a Deepsea and a Sub Date, now I am happy. Good luck!

Both would be great choices, but I would prefer the Sea Dweller:
