5402 D serie

Hey guys, I’m negotiating a 5402 D Serie serviced nov 2020. So the RO is in perfect condition.

There is one downside though. Dial and hands have been replaced with service parts (what AP now calls Classic Parts).

I’m trying to get it for 35k. My thought/fear is that I could get stuck with it in case I want to sell it, because of the service parts.

What do you think? Would you buy a 5402D with service dial and hands?

Thanks in advance

At that price, yes. When I purchase something like this, it means I must love it so much so I would plan to keep it for long and don't worry about value retention that much.

I'm not an expert on 5402 pricing, but in the current market 35k for a 39mm RO seems solid regardless of the replacement parts.

Depends on your personal take and how long you aim to keep it for.

If you are going to sell it eventually, most individuals buying a vintage piece wants original dials and hands or at bare minimum period correct parts.

It would be a hard pass for me on vintage piece like that.

I assume this is a two-tone? I would probably not mind (assuming the service was done by AP and fully documented), but I'm no expert in these matters.

i'm not sure what is the current price range for D-series
i was negotiating an A-series in mint condition from a known vintage dealer and he was talking six figures

$36K for a 5402 in steel seems really low, regardless of the dial being replaced. Used 15202's are now in the $50K range and clean 5404 A/B/C that I've seen are between $60K and $100K.

Also consider that on one of the italian forums 5402 expert found too much fake parts, non time period correct parts, watch cases, on almost every second 5402 offered on market from trusted and reputable dealers...

After reading that thread I found 5402 market is a mine field almost as bad as PND one...

Thanks for the feedbacks .

It’s a steel 5402D and was just serviced in 2020 at AP HQ Switzerland so I don’t worry about authenticity.

I will see it today, so will post some pictures later in the evening.

Hm. A steel Jumbo, just serviced, for $35k. Not sure what the question is?

The question is, will it be a hassle to resell it at some point because of the service parts.

Given that $35k seems to be about 50-60% of asking/auction prices one finds online that appears unlikely - which is why I think I'm missing something here.

Depends... where are you getting it from? If it’s from a private person I would be more careful. If it’s from a known reputable dealer then it’s possible. 5402 in steel for lower than market price deals are a bit worrying due to the possibility of being scammed. But if it’s genuine just with a service dial then it’s a great steal!

You've seen the AP service papers? This seller must have never heard of the internet. I assumed you were talking about a 5402SA. What are they thinking...

Yes I saw the service papers. He got the AP as a gift in 1981. So the 36k is pure profit for him.

You need to snatch that 5402 up fast. If any other collector or a grey gets wind of who this seller is that piece will be gone.
