Buying from AD is impossible, so I bought from a friend instead
I have bought most of my watches at retail, so I am not used to buying grey. I recently popped into one of the two ADs I have bought from before, asking if it was possible to purchase a DJ31 for my wife. Sadly, I was told that it was a "hot model" so I'd have to spend some money buying "non hot model" to get myself on a waiting list. You won't believe just how disappointed I was, hearing that.
Anyway, I have the 114060LN and 116610LV; the black Sub was meant to be the daily anywhere watch, which I ended up giving to my dad. With the LV, it wasn't the sort of watch I wanted to wear daily in to the office (well, not much in the office during virus times) so there was a "gap" for a black Sub. It just so happens a friend decided to sell her 116610LN and, since it was below market rate, I went along and pulled the trigger. Yes, the watch is used and considering she paid retail back in 2014, she's made a tidy profit. But hey, my reasoning is that the money is going to a friend who will put it to good use at the end of the day. Right? And on my end, I get a full and complete set; with red hang tag, green tag, books, cards, papers, boxes, bezel protector (yes, I prefer complete sets like this all the time). Sigh. I think this will probably be my last Rolex purchase, ever. |

Watch was too big for my friend, so she was wearing it on NATO. And since the bracelet was off, I decided to give it an ultrasonic bath before sizing the bracelet and putting it back on the watch

Nice pick up, even better its from a friend, atleast you know how it was looked after.
But since when has the DJ31 been a hot model? I had no idea. |

Nice Sub - pairs well with its green stablemate.
Which DJ31 is it that’s now considered ‘hot’? |

Congrats! Great timepiece for sure. Like you, it's hard to get some models so a year or two back i got the SS SkyD blue from a friend. Well worth it not to wait as the SkyD is an amazing timepiece!

Ladies DJ31 a ‘hot model’. What a farce. Not surprised it’s likely going to be your last Rolex.

Thank you all for the kind words.
Yes -- it is disappointing for your SA to tell you that a DJ31 is a "hot model". Specifically, I was looking for DJ31 model 278274; steel, jubilee, fluted bezel, green dial, index. I wanted to get it for my wife, to celebrate the birth of our daughter. And it isn't like I'm a stranger to this AD; I've purchased two-tone Submariners, 126710 BLNR and, because they are multi-brand AD, I have also bought a number of Omegas, Longines, Tudor from this store before. To be told that the DJ31 I'm after was a hot model, and that I'd have to spend money buying other Rolexes (whatever was in store is game) to get onto a "waiting list"... welp, it helps me decide that I'm unlikely to ever buy a modern Rolex ever again. |

I feel you. I'm also in Southeast Asia and it seems the pandemic has created an insatiable demand for Rolex. It is crazy; I've seen OP36 in Stella dials asking 2x and 2.3x retail. Its meant to be the starter Rolex but in the grey market its asking for more than an Exp 2.

2 months builds up quite a bit of gunk, as you will see. It was quite a surprise for me the first time. Now I regularly clean these bacteria traps.

So many AD's have so little stock any more . . . .
. . . . if it wasn't so sad it would be laughable.
