Advice - Sub and BB58?

I recently acquired a 14060M and am wondering if it’s worth keeping my black-dial Black Bay 58 too...since the BB58 feels “less than,” and they occupy the same category, I’m thinking of selling it.

Any thoughts / advice? Does it make any sense to keep both?

Don't do anything right away. See if you still wear it occasionally.

There are some folks who actually own more than one watch at a time, and they seem to enjoy that.

1. Do you wear it?
2. Do you like it ?
3. Do you need money?

It would be fun to have both if you can afford to.

I have the 116610LV and just bought the BB58 blue. I love having the variety of dial colors and I think the BB58 is a hidden gem. For the price, it is a watch that cannot be beaten. I also have a 5-digit Submariner, and I actually prefer the BB58 to that one.

In your case, the Sub has no date so it is more similar to the BB58 than in my collection where all of my Subs have the date, but for only $3.5K you will net by selling I definitely think the BB58 is worth keeping.

For me, it is one of my favorite watches...such a modern classic.

If it was blue, it would be a no brainer to keep it. Since it’s black, it is redundant. Not saying you should get rid of it. Just saying you have 2 watches that are basically the same thing. I’d probably trade it for something else...

You would probably making a loss selling the BB58, if your finance is doing ok then you might as well keep it.

I recommend keeping both.

I have a Sub41 and I want a BB, but the 58 is too small for me, and it's not available with black dial and blue bezel. The 42mm BB is available in that color scheme, but it's too thick at around 15mm. It has the same MT5402 movement as the BB58, but it's close to 3mm thicker. Why? Whiskey Tango Alpha Foxtrot?

Different? BB58 is indirectly based on 5 digit subs!

I think the 42mm BB has the MT5602 movement Only the 58 has the MT5402

having a smaller, more enjoyable collection works, but it all depends, many people have a collection as an allocation of $$$, but to me it should be that you always are enjoying all your piece, if not, it should probably go, unless it's still there for emotional reasons. For investments, there's better instruments than watches.

I looked further into it; you are correct. The MT5602 movement is 6.5mm thick, the MT5402 is only 4.99mm. That explains it.

Just out of curiosity...how big is your wrist? Have you tried on the BB58? When i first encountered the BB58 at the AD and tried it on, it was a black dial on NATO and I thought it was WAY too small. When I handed it back to the SA, I told my wife it would be a great watch for her and called it the Tudor "Lady Diver".

But as much as I tried, I couldn't get the watch out of my mind...surely the bracelet would make it look a bit larger, right? I finally broke and ordered the blue BB58 on bracelet and it is now tied for my favorite daily wear watch in my collection. Unless your wrist is 7.5" or larger, you may find that you adapt to the size of the 58 rather quickly and it just feels "right"...just my cents:)

Yes,but I just meant that that the BB 58 is more like a vintage 4 digit sub.

I would never sell a 14060 for a Black Bay.
Having a 14060 I would buy a BB58 blue

Two small problems with the BB58: First, my wrist is 7.5" and flat, so smaller than 40mm does not work for me even in a dress watch. Second, I would want a blue bezel and a black dial, and the BB58 does not offer that combination. I could look at the earlier BB which had an ETA-2824 movement and was thinner, but I want the in-house movement.

The 14060M is a tremendous watch and shining example of the 5-digit Rolex period -- congrats! I am a big BB58 fan, and feel (like many) that it is a modern reincarnation of 5-digit Subs (and also Tudor Subs). With that in mind, if you find yourself preferring the 14060M to the BB58 black, it is understandable. I can see why the BB58 black would seem redundant, and would also consider whether it is worth keeping if I were in your shoes.

That being said, selling the BB58 outright will probably result in a small financial loss. If you like the form factor but don't want redundancy, I think the optimal situation would be to trade it with someone direct 1:1 for the BB58 blue. Then, between the 14060M and the BB58 blue you've got a killer, versatile pair. Best wishes

Package it up in the box and shove it in the back of your closet. Forget about it for a few months and then see how you feel.

I’ve always wanted to do that instead of selling.

Completely agree, plus you'll not be able to replace that 14060 easily nowadays.
I think both watches are different enough to coexist, even both in black. But a great solution would be this option.
On thing is for sure, the Submariner stays.

They are quite similar. Neither is inferior to the other in my opinion. I would trade out the BB58 for the blue variant so you would have 2 watches to rotate

Take my advice I've owned both. Skip the Tudor. With each day that I wear the Tudor I become even more amazed with how usable and perfect the submariner is.

You appear to have already decided, at least subconsciously. I agree with your logic. The BB58 is a very nice watch but the Rolex does the same thing only much better. Unless you’re willing to use it as a beater sell the BB58.

I've got both the new Sub 41 (124060) and the BB58 blue, both work in perfect harmony within the collection and the BB58 is my daily.
