New to Rolex Advice on 16710 or 16760

G'Day everyone,
I wonder if I could beg your patience and advice on my entry to Rolex ownership.
I have spent some time over the years admiring the GMT on various wrists and finally decided to make a purchase, budget is around USD15k +/-
I have identified the GMT II with a 'Coke' bezel as my preferred choice, I have the following questions:

Fat lady 16760 or 16710 ? any pros or cons with either.

Reputable sellers, I'm not keen on taking a risk with a private sale, are sites such as Chrono24 or Bobs watches the best place to buy? Other suggestions?
Overseas shipping, I'm based in Sydney. Oz sellers?
Servicing , would I be advised to have it looked at by a Rolex service centre and what sort of costs am I likely to expect?
Unless advised to the contrary, I don't require original box or documentation, just some proof of genuine - I'm buying to wear for a the foreseeable future not to re-sell.
Bracelet sizes and adjusting, I have measured my wrist, just 7 inches - will I expect issues?

Thank you so much in advance for your help.
Andy

Bump?
Not sure if that's allowed but thought maybe it had slipped out of sight, would really appreciate some input on questions if anyone would be kind enough.
Thanks again

Reach out to the likes of Tropical Watch, Fog City Vintage, Grey and Patina (to name but a few). There’s also HQ Milton and Eric Ku at 10past10.

I have not personally purchased from any of these, but these have good online presence.

There is also Momentum in Dubai who I and several friends have purchased from. I can only say good things about him.

I would go with the 16710. Such a classic ref.

My advice would be, as always, buy the seller. Don’t be scared to pay a bit more from a Trusted Seller with a long history of reliability and excellence.

The easiest mistake to make is to get sucked in buying the “cheapest” one to get a great deal. Lots of lemons, fakes and Frankenwatches out there

Good luck. Look forward to the incoming.

I could be mistaken, but believe the 16760 uses the 3085 movement and has an independently adjustable 24 hour hand, while the 16710 uses the 3185 movement and has an independently adjustable "jump" 12 hour hand.

http://www.gmtmasterhistory.com/gmt-...ref_16710.html

Personally, I prefer the 16710 because of the slimmer case and the 3185 movement (and later production the 3186 movement). The 16710 bezel inserts are easily changed between all black, black and red, or blue and red.

You can't go wrong with either reference IMHO.

I would recommend a 16710 and for 15000$ you should be able to get all three inserts and a jubilee
I can highly recommend HQmilton, my friend and I have bought traded many Rolex with them and they can offer you a fresh service if needed
Here is a nice example with a coke insert

Many other trusted sellers , just be sure you buy the seller

16710. For a newbie, I recommend buying the cleanest, youngest example - a D or Z series. Best chance of being all original, maybe one previous service, least polished, etc. Happy hunting!

Gmts in Sydney or Melbourne 2nd hand watch shops goes for $16k-17k Aud so you're within budget, but they're snapped up pretty quickly. Just check out these Australian shops frequently and you'll see gmts, Sydney vintage watch, luxuria watch, the watch gallery I bought my F series 16710 there in 2015 for $9500 Aud.

Personally go for the 16710. Love mine with the coke bezel.

Remember though buy the seller.

One of the Rolex ADs near me that also does used Rolex models, Radcliffe Jewelers, has or has recently had a few 16710s in stock. Erik Szper is the guy to talk to and he's a stellar guy to work with. I have no idea how they handle internal shipping. I've also purchased from HQ Milton and they are also great to work with.

The 16760 suffers from dial issues which was common on several models during the 1980s. Based on my experience, the most common defect is corrosion around the markers. This seemed to clear up during the 1990s.

Be careful with 16760 watches from the 1980s. I've seen many with later replacement tritium dials which most owners/sellers are unaware of.

You might also consider a 16700 - great watch with quick set date and great build quality. Has all the versatility of the 16710 and wears fantastic!

Five months later I have my 16710 a '99 (swiss only) coke in great condition, just wanted to acknowledge those who offered advice on this and a further specific thread regarding the piece I ended up buying.
Cheers all.
