Advice regarding first Rolex purchase
This is my first post here on this forum, so go easy on me. I'm a middle aged guy who has a small watch collection. My current daily wearer is an Omega Seamaster 300m. Love this watch for what it is.
Years ago, I told myself I always wanted to buy a Rolex, but never did. Fast forward to present; and I've learned (sadly) it is virtually impossible for the average guy to buy the most popular sports models without going to the grey market (and paying a very large premium over retail) or buying used. Like other "would be" buyers, if I had only known this several years ago, I would have went into an AD and purchased something like a Submariner. Such an iconic timeless watch! Anyhow, I've moved on and now already have divers from other brands to include my daily wearer from Omega. But I've kept thinking about (perhaps) an alternative watch from Rolex, such as the Datejust 41 - which I've gotten the impression it is a bit more possible to snag one of these from an AD.....still with persistence and wait time from an AD, but again more of a possibility to buy at retail over the more popular sports models. So, here's my questions. What do you guys think of the Datejust for someone (like myself) with a casual lifestyle? What are the general perceptions of this watch? Is it truly considered a versatile watch, or (in reality) considered a really dressy watch with a lot of bling factor? Honestly I am not looking for something that "screams" look at my wrist! I simply would like a Rolex that I could enjoy for myself without anything perceived as too much over the top. I love luxury watches for what they are and "not" as status symbols or showoff pieces. Of course, I can't try on or see any Rolex watches in person, only the photos I see online so it makes it complicated. Within the Datejust models, I see the fluted bezel with the jubilee bracelet....which looks so nice. I realize the fluted bezel adds to the price, and may (or may not) add too much bling factor for my tastes. But I am thinking I've got a better chance of snagging that model - simply because it is higher at retail versus the smooth bezel. I appreciate any advice and/or suggestions here. Buying Rolex seems so complicated now days unlike other luxury watch brands for so many different reasons. I have to think about the ability to actually obtain one (at retail) as well as my lifestyle and what I would feel good about personally wearing. |
