Thinking about adding a Panerai

Ladies and Gents first off a big thanks! Thanks to all of you who share your passion and knowledge for these fine timepieces we all love on a daily basis here on TRF. The amount of knowledge you share with us can't be found in one place anywhere else and for that I applaud you

I would like to call upon that knowledge one more time to ask about Panerai watches. I would like to purchase one in the near future (Maybe around October as a birthday gift to myself ) and would like to know which models you would all recommend along with pictures if possible. I definitely would prefer a 44mm and somewhere in the 3500 - 4K price range.

Thank you in advance for all your help and knowledge as always

Head on over to the Seabold Building, lots of gently used Panerai's there. I'd check it out first.

Maybe you should look here first.

Panerai in deep view.

My Advice would be to go for a titanium base - something like a 176 (44mm). I would try & get something more modern than any of the older models. I know they are worth money, but the build quality wasn't there. Pam 55's are increasing in value but were/are notorious for poor build quality. I've got an incoming 292 which has a black ceramic case & is manual wind. Here is a pic of my old 1998 Sub 24 A series.

i admire them but there has not been one that catches my eye yet. They look better in display cabinets or on other enthusiast's wrists....

Can't go wrong with the 111 for a first PAM.

Wow, Jocke! Thanks for sharing that link. Quite surprising as to the build quality. That is somewhat of a let down.

I thougt hard about both HUBLOT and PAM. One thing bothers me and it bothers me a LOT.
1- That extra sub-dial with NO #'s indicating what it actually does or represents I find bothersome.
Hublot has the same thing and to me it looks out of place. Is it a second hand??
The Rolex Daytona has all the sub dials clearly marked so you know what they are there for.

2- The GMT PAM to me is pretty useless as there is no rotating bezel, just the 4th hand with no real clear markings for it to align with.

3- I DO like the very basic model PAM for their size and look, but with #1 and #2 above, they will not be getting my $$ yet. Same for Hublot.

And this of course is all IMHO....

that is an E series,at least 6-7 years old now.I suspect the previous owner did not have it service. To me this is wear and tear so i'm not surprise...as for the movt. We all know its ETA6497,Panerai just decorated it to be more attractive for the display back...if anyone would do the maths, yesh pannies is way overpriced esp those with the ETA movts.

I know, it could have just been a bad apple...and I realize that. A friend of mine bought a DJ and had to send it back to RSC 3 times for a problem it had with the movement. If it could happen to our beloved Rolex watches, it can happen to any watch out there! Thanks for all the input thus far....I have always liked Panerai watches ever since seeing a client of mine walk into the bank with one on about 5 years ago. I will have one soon and yes...it starts with one...and onward from there LOL

Hiram, welcome to the dark side!!

Let me tell you something coming from a fellow Miamian don't worry about that article on TZ this guy bought a used Pam who knows what the old owner did to it before , I love Rolex too and there's a lot of complains about them too, no brand is perfect, don't let something like this push you away from a nice watch like Panerai.

I own two already and I love them both, maybe start with a 000 or 111.....

Here is a pic of my 000 with a Rob Montana Vintage strap!!

I LOVE the look of that - so simple. It says so little but so much at the same time! That's a beautiful watch you have there. Enjoy it and wear it in good health

I wouldn't be turned off just by one owners experience with a 7 year old watch that should have been serviced years ago. Also I think its kind of funny how they're dissapointed that the decorative work didn't extend under the covered parts. Kinda makes me think Infiniti should have painted both sides of my cars sheet metal in exterior paint.

I would say that any time you buy something as mechanically complex as a modern watch you have an increased chance of problems, and I don't care who made it.

Hiram, you can narrow down your search to which model you're most in love with.
Is it Luminor? Radiomir? or Sub model? it'll be much easier to maneuver from there.

Next question would be, do you like a plain simple dial? or with second hand?

With 3.5-4K price range, you can easily steal the basic models. I would spare some $$$ from the budget for the straps

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck on your decision and keep us posted.

I like the Radiomirs and the Luminors the most - I guess mostly the simple dials although the second hand doesn't bother me at all. I saw some of TR's in some prior posts that looked GREAT! It's funny you should mention the straps also.. about how much do those go for? Thanks for your help guys!

I'm not sure but I think it's one of your vintage ones...I remember you posting pictures of 2 of your Pams in a previous thread. Please pardon my ignorance...i'm not too familiar with the Pam models...hence this thread
