I would like to purchase another Rolex from a gray market but worried that the prices will sink any thoughts what the future will hold?

Prices might go up. Prices might go down.

Has there ever been a historical "tanking" of Rolex prices?

Without question, the prices on the Grey Market will tank at some point.

Historically folks went to the Grey Market for cheaper options and it will return to that as soon as the current FOMO buying frenzy abates.

Rolex makes a nice watch at MSRP but it's not a competitive product once you get into current grey pricing. There are way way better watches available for the same money. I'd advocate exploring other brands before paying currents asks...

It’s going to stay there, thanks to a combination of desirability, market manipulation and just large transfer of wealth from the young and poor to the old and rich (and their relatives).

Prices are mostly meaningless, we live in an era where wealth is everywhere (not to everyone) and prices are just globally going up. From the commodities to the luxuries, even the stocks are getting more expensive.

Market manipulation??? By whom? Transfer of wealth from the poor?? That's a new one on me. Prices are not meaningless, if you walk into a store and the price tag says $10 you actually have to pay that amount.

I don’t think you’ve quite understood what I meant.

Price manipulation is done by various grey, marketing items they don’t have, to a high price in order to make the demand believe this is the current fair price. See C24 listing with the same watch at high prices through various grey. There are clear sign of collusion throughout the market.

Transfer of wealth from the young and poor is what is happening worldwide, with tax policies, wages, debts and other means the ruling class has in place. See USA as the main exemple. Gains are captured on the way up and losses are socialized.

Prices are meaningless in the sense that 10k or 20k is nothing but the immobilisation of a fraction of a percent to those who buy these watches.

I'm not sure what the future will bring but you better get your kicks now. Hehee.. ok, ill try to get more serious with this age old question. With the non availability at ADs and the demand out weighing the supply you won't get hurt much if at all. The market prices could even rise more as there is no sign of ADs getting any inventory to actually display for any walk in customers and what they do get will go to Vip's or their greys who are constantly on the prowl for their own inventory.

I operated under the assumption that they are going to flatline and fall to or below the price of a new model when I got my Sub C.

Cant see why it will sink in the immediate future. But the demand has to fade at one point, as new trends take over - Its a cycle.

Rubbish - demand is only going up. Rolex is uniquely positioned as arguably the most well known and recognizable brand in the world - and the next generation is glad to acquire them as the status symbols they are.

In addition, as models are discontinued they increase as there are no more being produced and that scarcity drives the price - again always up.

Greys are the only option for some some and they provide a service and that service comes at a premium cost.

Rolex has been hugely desirable by celebrities/ music artists etc since the eighties when I can remember, my kid its ten and him and his friends speak of them Rolex will always be one of the top luxury brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton etc are able to hold there places, it’s not a fashion trend it’s a status symbol.

I don’t think the prices will fall. I think the value of flat currency is.

The whole house of cards is bound to implode at some point. Every asset class is inflated beyond belief (stocks, housing, watches), so it’s a matter of time! Rolex will be bought at a 10% discount again soon and ADs will beg you to buy steel models.

Great for those who are selling their watches to buy at AD prices, but horrible for those that do not have a great AD and cannot get what they want.

Hard to predict the future but I would think this craziness is not sustainable at current levels…

Look at this insanity

Use non-AD for discontinued and used models only.

I keep saying, it will probably return to 2019 levels, maybe by the end of the year. Not prices, but the general state of things.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but pre-Covid I believe the following was the Rolex situation. You could walk into most ADs and either find or order most generic Datejusts and PM watches outside of the really popular/hot ones. They'd be fairly stocked with SS Datejusts, at the very least. In terms of Professional models, you could find the odd Explorer I or II in display cases, or at the very least they could order one for you and put you on a real and honest waitlist.

Subs were a bit more challenging, but still doable with an actual wait at the AD, or a small premium from grey. GMTs were not happening, but just had smaller grey premiums. More so the Daytona.

I mean I think this is what will happen.

But I just cannot see a world where we return to Subs being available at substantial discounts from grey dealers. If we do, i think we'll have other things to worry about.

Buy it if you like it at a price you like it at. Nothing less nothing more.

As far as investments go, a buy and hold strategy for luxury watches has not historically beaten many other liquid investment alternatives.

$1-$2k over may be palatable if it’s the model I really want but otherwise if I can’t get it at retail I’m looking elsewhere.

Why does this bother you? Do you plan to sell? If so when?

My take is that if I want to buy a watch I buy it and wear it.
