My Explorer 124270 Experience
Hi guys,
It's been a little over a week since I received my Explorer 1 124270 and I would like to give you some of my impressions: I'm 6'3" with a 7 inch flat wrist so I feel I manage a wide range of sizes. When I first put the watch on my wrist at the AD I was pretty happy and excited, I didn't even think much about the size at that moment, all I could see was the quality and that beautiful deep rich black dial with the classic Explorer layout. As time passed, I started to feel that the watch looked small on me, giving me doubts about my purchase decision. Selling it crossed my mind, but I didn't want to look/feel like a flipper, so I decided to give a little more time for my brain to adjust to the sizing. (Also, the Explorer fits ANY collection) In the time that I received the Explorer, I also received a SUF 180 which is a 38.5mm size, I find that size perfect for my wrist and I found myself switching back and forth between watches in the same day. Whenever I wore the SUF, I thought, I wish the explorer was a little bigger, but at the same time, I really wanted to wear the explorer more than the SUF. So I started wearing the explorer all day and even sleeping with it, it is a joy to wear, so unobstrusive and comfortable, but when I look down, again that thought of "smallness" crossed my mind. So then, after many days of thinking if I made the right decision it hit me. This is the Explorer's way. This is part of the 127240 experience, its not that I find the watch small, its the way it is supposed to be, it becomes part of you, perfect under any situation, all you need nothing you don't. It started to make sense in my mind and instead of thinking big/small, I started to think the purpose of it. So in the end, I'm very happy with the decision, after many days I finally "get it". There are many other watches that can be bigger but this one suits its purpose like no other watch. And I'm ok with that. |

I’mroughly your size (6’1, ~7” wrist) and it looks very similar on me. I’m also very much of the opinion that this is supposed to be a 36mm watch, and you accept that whether your wrist is 6”, 7” or 8” around. It’s not like the TAG, Omega and Cartier watches that all come in many sizes and you pick what suits you best. You pick the Explorer because it is the Explorer.

Cool that you know enjoy and appreciate it! That’s all that matters.
I will say, however, that the EXP 39 is ALSO a relatively small watch. I think some Guys on TRF get “tricked” by pictures of the 36mm where the 36mm looks more than small, big even. Pictures of the 36mm on TRF generally look much bigger than it actually is. ( Closeups always give watches the appearance of being bigger than they are. Your pics, I think, give a more accurate picture of the size. During a lunch outside, I asked my gf just today to put on my 39 mm; she has a 6 inch wrist and I thought the 39mm looked a touch small! And I don’t like big watches! Ultimately, I do think the Explorer, 36 or 39, is SUPPOSED to look on the smaller side and just become a part of you and be really comfortable. A great watch. Congrats! |

It looks small on this guy too but I guess the message is to become ONE with the Explorer. I’m doing the same with my GMT. It’s a Rolex; be glad you’ve got one!

That ad is so good never seen it before. The Exp is a good starting point on any collection or a finish line on any collection. Quote:

Rolex 36mm watches have their charm and deserve a place in any collection. You wear them and not the other way around.

It sounds like, for the time being, you have convinced yourself that the watch is big enough. But I have found that the nagging voice in the back of your head that keeps telling you the watch is too small will eventually win out. Don't worry...there are plenty of flawless 39mm MK2 214270 to be had on the secondary market when you are ready :)

Beautiful watch but it’s pretty obvious it’s quite small in your wrist but perhaps that’s your preference and that’s fine. Congratulations!

Having said that I know the 124270 is definitely not for me. Waaaaay to small but happy for those who do like it.

Some people like a small watch on any wrist. Others prefer a bigger watch. I like a bigger watch but I still think the Explorer is cool.

I think that the fit is perfect. There are far too many people with small/medium wrists dying to wear the biggest pie plate Rolex billboard that they can get on their wrist.
Frankly it’s a gauche trend. But you find it in every niche enthusiast group. Much like the full set of clubs with the matching staff bag for the weekend golf hacker or the guy who lifts his truck to the sky with absurd wheels and tires. It’s a plea for attention. I find it best to wear what you like and nothing else. If watch proportioning was so stringent then they wouldn’t make the bracelets big enough to accommodate larger wrists. |

That watch is way too small for you man. Your instinct is spot on. Seriously... The 39mm would be borderline small on you as well.

Trade it across for the Ex1 39mm while the premiums for the new 36mm are high, imo
