Why is it that the steel Rolexes sell for more than the two toned watches?

Is it the scratch resistance?

Although I have noticed this over several years, I bought a two tone Daytona. I personally feel like the gold should hold its value and simply be worth more.

What do you think?

It’s all supply and demand. These days the two tone is just not as popular as it used to be in the past.

Steel is hard to get so people want steel

To some people myself included yes, but obviously that's not true for those who like TT. I think less people love TT so less demand explains the difference.

I have some TTs, however I must confess I like them a bit less than if they were PM :)

The amount of gold used in TT or full PM is not gold’s market value. Ie. you don’t get $5000 worth of gold in a TT. you might get $2000 worth. Others may know better on the forum..

Theory going around that Rolex is taking advantage of the SS shortage/demand to push buyer to TT or PM. Much higher profit margins for them..

Buy a TT or PM and you will then qualify for a SS..

I think it's also an age thing. When I was younger I only liked SS, but recently, now that I am older and wiser, I went for a TT Datejust ;)

For the Sub and GMT I do thing the SS looks better as it's more functional. I was offered a TT Sea-Dweller by the AD but it didn't really click with me.

I can deny that. And I've had the watch...styles and preferences change. I personally don't like the 13 lb at all anymore, and I actually have convinced two people to sell it, since they no longer liked it nor wore it any longer either.

To give you an idea, the chnr TT GMT is actually fairly simple to get, regardless of what you see on the Grey market. I cannot think of one attractive two tone watch. Though I can't deny that the two-tone datejust of the 80s and 90s are still cool.

I'm of the strong opinion that you either go stainless steel or all precious metal, not in between.

I think a contributing reason is that at msrp, the SS are much less expensive. So the SS attracts a greater market. They want it, can’t get it, so convince themselves to pay more.

Great lol. I'd be lying if I told you I've never considered a TT Sub and I blame TRF for that. However, I get tired of colors pretty fast and I sold my 16710 coke right after the honeymoon ended because I got tired of a half red bezel (among other reasons) so I know I won't even try a TT.

I agree. I think the bluesy is way more an attractive watch than most SS options. It is truly a classic beauty. Plus it is nice to mix it up and have a little PM.

I think the lower price point attracts a LOT. Back when the only thing premium was really the panda, I definitely wanted the Bluesy over the SS sub, and that extra cost at the time really did hold me off from pulling the trigger.
