Has Rolex ever made limited editions without saying so?

Take for example one of the colored dial OP's.... could they only make a couple of thousand and then stop? Any watch in the past have this situation?

Im not sure how many were ever produced but the 116600 SD4K was produced for only 2.5-3years making it extremely rare by Rolex standards when compared to submariners or the submariner LV even.

The Comex Sea-Dwellers and the green Turn-o-graph for the Japanese market spring to mind.

Country specific dials are low production (or custom ordered). Many examples of Saudi or UAE dials. Plenty of corporate examples too, from airline models to Domino’s pizza datejusts from the 80s.
Also lower production day / date wheels, such as Arabic

Yes kind of but they’re not marketed or sold as limited editions so it’s not the same as Omega etc.

The only real limited additions I can recollect is only a few one being a quite recent limited to 300 only was a TOG for Japan market only. Again the other was the vintage Space-dweller again Asian market only. Rolex has made a few limited additions over the years a few commemorated ones like the Panama canal watches. But in general Rolex is in the market to sell vast numbers of watches around 800000- 900000 a year.

Lowest production run I’ve seen is 8. No idea if it was marketed as a special edition though

You mean apart from the current range of SS watches?

I was really just thinking short run. Sorry for the confusion. Maybe a model was just really unpopular and faded away.

Not officially annonced as a limited edition, but presented as the 50th anniversary: SD43 mk1, probably just a few thousand made during one single year.
