Just for fun: Gold sub (blue) vs AP RO (white)
I’m casually looking into a watch to add at some point down the line, but in no hurry. Per Chrono24, the 41mm gold sub with blue dial (126618LB) and the AP RO white dial (15500ST) are about the same price. MSRP is a different story, but getting an AP at retail is not easy.
Two very different watches. The AP has amazing fit and finish, truly an a work of art piece. The bracelet dazzles like few others (and I love my jubilee bracelet for that), yet at the same time it’s somewhat under the radar in all steel. On the other hand, a gold sub is a gold sub. A brick of gold and that pop of blue is stunning - definitely NOT under the radar. Tough choice, glad I’m in no rush to choose. Just for fun, which would you choose? |

Tough call. The AP most people could wear more since people don't really know what it is and its stainless. A solid gold Rolex is a solid gold Rolex, no going under the radar there. IF I could pull of YG in my daily life and it was my only watch it would most likely be the Rolex. While the AP is more special from a finish, exclusivity side, the reliability and service would sway me toward Rolex. Plus if I only had one watch in my collection I would want it to be a PM unit... thats just me.

AP RO. easily
not a fan of yellow gold. so the choice is very clear for me. if i had to pick a PM rolex, i'd go for WG daytona. |

This one for me all day long. I was dead set on buying the 15500st as my first AP so much so that I nearly ordered it online without even trying it on. Just so happened a local dealer had all 3 dial colours in stock so I went snd tried them on. I have to say I’ve never been so underwhelmed by a watch in my entire life and there’s no bracelet adjustment either. People always hold AP in a much higher regard the Rolex but the quality for me was not apparent. Just my experience obviously it’s a hugely popular watch for AP and many people love it but I do recommend trying it on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For me, the sub is beautiful and I don’t like the look of the nuts and bolts RO look, so sub. The blue dial on the sub is amazing and the dial on the RO looks like outdated bathroom tile to me.

If black and gold, a close call, but in this case the AP

AP at retail. Sub if sub is retail but AP is gray.
If money is no object, then gold AP. |

YG Sub LB all day.
If it was a blue dial Royal Oak that would be tougher. The YG Sub LB is very special, seriously underrated in today's market. |

Both very nice but gold sub blue dial takes the split decision.

To look at - love it, especially the dial, hence my initial interest, but after handling it / the feel of it just didn’t like it personally.

No competition at all for me.
Solid Gold Sub ALL DAY. As a previous owner of a AP15400 yes they are nice but trust me the sub is nicer. Plus that AP is a HUGE scratch magnet. In 3 months the AP will look like crap. Way worse than the PCLs on the sub. |

I think the AP looks dated and ugly, which illustrates how much personal taste plays a role. If I had to personally choose between those two, I would opt for the Rolex without question. If others were in the mix, Vacheron Constantin Overseas is probably the yellow or rose gold watch that would excite me.

Funny this should come up! I’m sitting on our deck in Hawaii, on vacation. When I decided which watch to bring for the trip, I wanted some thing I could jump in the ocean, but also wear out to dinner. Decided to swap out the two-tone oyster bracelet on my 16613 Bluesy, for a blue Everest strap. How fun is this?!? So I too, vote for the Sub over the AP. The Rolex will always be both snazzy, yet playful. It’s just more versatile. (And I agree, your solid YG sub is simply stunning!) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No it won’t, this myth needs to die. I have worn a 15400 several times a week for the last 5 years and the scratches are insignificant. Sounds like someone doesn’t know how to take care of his watches.
